What Is Territorial Army Exam 2024?

The territorial army exam is a national exam conducted by the Indian Territorial army recruitment authority to select candidates for the various posts of the territorial army. Candidates can join the Territorial Army as Officers and Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO). 

The TA (Territorial Army) is the second major line of defence posts after the regular Indian army. By regular army, we mean the permanent and the non-permanent commission of the Indian Army. They are a part of the regular army but give their contribution as a unit in the time of requirements only. 

  • Territorial Army (TA) officers are recruited to alleviate and upgrade the work development of the regular Indian army. 
  • They help the regular Indian army by clearing all the basic burdens and performing static duties. 
  • The territorial army helps to manage the civil administration.
  • They give their contribution in managing civil problems in situations like natural calamities, disasters and many more. 
  • They also help in maintaining the essentials for the regular Indian army. 

Currently, the Territorial army has  40,000 personnel consisting of Departmental TA units such as Railway, IOC, Telecommunication and General Hospital,  ONGC, and the non-Departmental TA units of Infantry Bn (TA) and Ecological Bn (TA) affiliated to various Infantry Regiments. They are all recruited through the yearly recruitments.

Territorial army war history

The territorial army has a very proud history as they have served in the 1962, 1965 and 1971 operations.  They are also known as  “Terriers”. They have also given their contribution in Operation -PAWAN in Sri Lanka, Operation RAKSHAK in Punjab & J&K, Operation RHINO and Operation BAJRANG in North East. There are many examples of situations concerning the civil administration and natural calamities where the territorial army has shown their great valour and some of these are earthquakes in Latoor (Maharashtra), Uttarkashi in Garhwal Himalayas and the Super Cyclone in Orissa.

Territorial army awards and medal 

The men of the territorial army are nowhere less when it comes to medals and awards. As per the data by the Indian army, many men of the territorial army have been decorated for their gallantry and distinguished services. So far they have earned 02 Ati Vishesh Seva Medal (AVSM), 15 VSM, 05 Vir Chakra, 13 Sena Medal, 25 Mentioned-in-Despatches and 43 COAS commendation cards.

  • The territorial exam is conducted by the Indian Territorial Army Recruitment Authority.
  • It is an objective type examination. 
  • It is conducted for the Territorial Army (i.e. Non-Departmental) for Civilians & Ex-Servicemen.
  • The selection process for the territorial army exam is divided into two categories, which are mentioned below:-
  1. Civilians: Screening (includes Written exam & interview), SSB, Medical Board for final selection 
  2. Ex-Servicemen: Interview only
  • The minimum level that of education that is required to apply for the territorial army exam is Graduation.
  • The total time duration of the territorial army exam is two hours. 

Territorial Army Exam Notification

Territorial Army Exam Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria of the territorial army are decoded by the Indiana army recruitment authority. Here, we will provide the eligibility criteria as per the previous year territorial army recruitment notification.

  • Age Limit– The candidate should be of an age between 19 and 42 years, on the date of application.
  • Educational Qualification- The candidate should at least have completed graduation or its equivalent.
  • Citizenship – The candidate should be a citizen of India.
  • Physical – The candidate should be both physically and mentally healthy.
  • Employment Standing-
    • Self-employment, or
    • Gainful employment – The candidate should already have a full-time and reliable paid job, or
    • Mainstay civilian professions- This includes people involved in the necessary community work like Accountants, doctors, para-medical, etc.
    • Ex-servicemen – Ex-service officers who qualify the age criteria and have desired physical/mental fitness are eligible to apply for the Territorial Army.

Who is not eligible to apply for the Territorial army?

People who are currently serving in the Regular Army, Navy force, Air Force, Police, GREF (General Reserve Engineer Force), Para Military and other such forces are not allowed to apply for Territorial Army.

Territorial Army Application Process 

The application forms for the territorial army will be out very soon on the online portal of the Territorial army. Candidates can check out this page later to get a direct link to the Application form. The candidates who will apply for the territorial army need to pay Rs 200 as application fees.

Officer Civilians, Territorial Army Selection Process

The officer civilian territorial army selection process is divided into three stages, mainly the screening stage, SSB interview process and medical examination. 

Stage 1 – Screening stage (Written and PIB Interview)

The candidates who have applied for the Territorial Army exam are invited to the screening process. This includes two types of exams. 

  • First is the Written Exam which will test reasoning, Elementary mathematics, general knowledge and hold on the language. 
  • Second is the interview round, which is conducted by the Preliminary Interview Board (PIB) of the territorial army.

Stage 2 – Service Selection Board (SSB) examination

The candidate who will be selected from the first round will be invited for the SSB interview round. Candidates will have to go through the five-day interview process.

Step 3 – Medical Examination

Selected candidates will then be referred for a proper health check-up. Medical examinations of each candidate will be conducted according to standards set by the Military Hospital.

Ex-Servicemen Territorial Army Selection Process

The ex-servicemen will be interviewed by ASB (Army Headquarters Selection Board) held at the Additional Directorate General Territorial Army, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence. The candidates were then sent for a medical examination at the Armed Forces Clinic. Finally, after a round of verification, candidates are given a call letter. 

Territorial Army Exam Pattern

For Civilians:-

  • There are two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Also, each paper will be of 100 marks. So, the total marks for the written test are 200 marks.
  • Exam Duration – Each paper is held for 2 hours.
  • Exam Type – OMR sheet will be provided. The paper will be objective. 
  • Each paper will be further divided into two parts. Each section of the paper will be composed of 50 questions carrying 50 marks.
  • Negative marking – There will be a negative markmark0.33 marks for every wrong answer.
  • Qualifying Marks – The qualifying marks for the territorial army written exam of Territorial Army is 40% in each section. And, on average, the total marks should be at least 50%.

For Ex-servicemen:-

There will be no written exam for the ex-servicemen. The candidates will just have to go through the interview round.
