US Air Force Awards GE Aerospace $5 Billion Contract for F110-GE-129 Engines for Foreign Military Sales

The US Air Force has entered a significant $5 billion contract with GE Aerospace for the development of F110-GE-129 engines specifically tailored for foreign military sales. This engine, which was first launched in 1992, has proven its reliability and performance by powering renowned combat aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle and the F-16 Fighting Falcon, both of which are utilized by various international allies.

Under the terms of this new agreement, GE Aerospace will collaborate closely with the US military to provide solutions, spare parts, and necessary services designed to meet the evolving operational requirements of allied forces. This partnership aims to maintain and enhance the “operational readiness” of these advanced fighter jets that operate on a global scale.

Notably, the F110 engine family has accrued over 11 million flight hours, underscoring its extensive usage and acceptance within the defense sector. Amy Gowder, CEO and President of GE Aerospace Defense & Systems, expressed her pride in securing this agreement with the US Air Force, emphasizing that it reinforces the F110-GE-129 as the preferred engine for F-15 and F-16 fleets worldwide. She highlighted the contract as a testament to the ongoing trust in the engine’s performance, reliability, and overall value for critical military missions.

The F110-GE-129 engine is a sophisticated turbofan system capable of generating 29,000 pounds (approximately 13,154 kilograms) of thrust. It displays impressive dimensions, measuring 15 feet (4.6 meters) in length with a maximum diameter of 46.5 inches (118 centimeters). Additionally, this engine can handle an impressive airflow of up to 270 pounds (122.4 kilograms) per second during operation.

In addition to its American military applications, the F110-GE-129 engine has also been integrated into the Mitsubishi F-2 Viper Zero, which is currently in service with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

GE Aerospace is rapidly expanding its portfolio, having accepted a contract earlier this year to maintain engines for the Indian Air Force’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. Furthermore, the company recently secured a deal to supply engines to the Polish Armed Forces for their Apache Guardian rotorcraft. In 2023, GE also collaborated on the development of an engine for the US Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft, as well as contributing to the recapitalization program for the KC-135 military tanker.

The contract with the US Air Force not only solidifies GE Aerospace’s role in providing critical engine solutions for allied forces, but it also highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing military aviation capabilities across the globe.
