Poland Reassures US Troop Presence After Personnel Repositioning from Jasionka Base

Poland’s government reaffirmed on Tuesday that American troops will continue to be stationed on its soil, following the announcement from the United States regarding the repositioning of personnel from the critical Jasionka base, situated near the border with Ukraine. This base has played a pivotal role since just before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, facilitating the majority of military aid being sent to Kyiv.

In a statement released on Monday, the US Army disclosed plans to relocate military equipment and personnel from Jasionka to different locations within Poland. The announcement emphasized that this move was the result of extensive assessment and planning conducted in close cooperation with Polish authorities and NATO allies.

While the army did not disclose the number of troops being repositioned or their new locations, Polish President Andrzej Duda sought to clarify the situation, stating that this change in troop deployment should not be interpreted as a withdrawal. He expressed confidence in the continued American military presence in Poland, underscoring the importance of the partnership between the two nations.

Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz also took to social media platform X to reassure the Polish public, confirming that US troops will remain in Poland, albeit in different areas. He noted that the responsibilities previously held by American forces in Jasionka are now being assumed by other NATO allies. Furthermore, Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted that NATO is actively taking over operational responsibilities at Jasionka, a decision that was finalized during the alliance’s summit in Washington in July 2024.

Currently, there are approximately 10,000 American soldiers stationed in Poland, contributing to the security framework of both Poland and the broader NATO alliance. The ongoing deployment underscores Poland’s strategic role as a key supporter of Ukraine and a vital component in facilitating military logistics within the region.
