Major General Amit Singh Sohal

In a solemn military ceremony at the New Military Station in Prayagraj, Maj Gen Amit Singh Sohal, VSM, has officially assumed the position of General Officer Commanding for the Purva Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Sub Area. This event signifies a critical leadership transition within the Indian Army, emphasizing the strategic importance of the region.

Maj Gen Sohal, a distinguished officer from the Corps of Engineers, was commissioned in December 1990. With an extensive and illustrious career, he brings a wealth of experience, particularly from his various command roles in the South Western and Eastern theatres. He has also served internationally during the United Nations Mission in Lebanon, contributing to India’s ongoing commitment to UN peacekeeping, which has seen the deployment of over 650 peacekeepers, including an infantry battalion group and a Level II Hospital, since 1998.

The ceremony highlighted Maj Gen Sohal’s dynamic leadership, developed through his extensive background in the Corps of Engineers, a historic unit established post-1857 that is renowned for its engineering capabilities and combat readiness. In his address to the troops, he called for the maintenance of the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and dedication. His remarks signaled a renewed focus on operational preparedness, administrative excellence, and veteran welfare throughout the region.

Maj Gen Sohal’s appointment comes at a time when Prayagraj’s military significance is increasing. This importance was underscored by the historic Northern Command Investiture Ceremony that took place in March 2024, which marked the first occasion this event was held outside Udhampur. That ceremony celebrated acts of bravery and reinforced the region’s role in bolstering defenses along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), amidst ongoing tensions.

With his extensive background and clear vision, Maj Gen Sohal’s leadership is expected to strengthen and enhance the Indian Army’s strategic operations in the region, ensuring that high standards are upheld during these challenging times.
