The Southern Command of the Indian Army held a successful seminar on Additive Manufacturing for the Sustenance of Combat Critical Equipment at the Regional Signal and Mechanical Engineers Institute (RSAMI) in Pune. The event gathered a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, members of academia, and veterans from the Armed Forces, to discuss the future of advanced manufacturing technologies in the defense sector.

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the necessity of adopting state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques to enhance the long-term reliability and sustenance of combat-critical equipment. He underscored that innovative manufacturing methods are essential in maintaining operational efficiency on the battlefield.

The seminar saw Lieutenant General JS Sidana, Director General and Senior Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME), provide valuable insights into the roadmap for integrating additive manufacturing within the Indian Army. He highlighted the significance of these technologies in bolstering operational readiness, asserting that they can play a transformative role in the Army’s logistical capabilities.

Interactive panel discussions further engaged participants in exploring strategies to accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing in the defense ecosystem. Experts pointed out that leveraging these technologies could significantly reduce dependency on imports, expedite repair and maintenance cycles, and ultimately enhance mission preparedness for the Armed Forces.

Officials noted that the seminar functioned as a crucial collaborative platform, effectively aligning military needs with industrial capabilities and academic research. This alignment is pivotal in supporting the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, aiming for greater self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The discussions highlighted the potential for collaborative efforts to strengthen India’s capabilities and the operational readiness of its armed forces through innovative manufacturing solutions.
