The Indian Air Force recently extended its congratulations to Air Marshal Philip Rajkumar (Retd) for receiving the distinguished Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in the Science and Technology category. This accolade recognises his remarkable contributions to India’s indigenous defence aviation programmes.

A pioneering test pilot, Air Marshal Rajkumar also served as the Commandant of the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE). He was instrumental in the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme while serving as Project Director at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). His leadership and deep technical knowledge were crucial in advancing the Tejas from its initial prototype stage through successful flight trials. This achievement has significantly laid the groundwork for India’s quest for self-reliance in the design and development of combat aircraft.

With a service history that includes his participation as a veteran of the 1965 War, Air Marshal Rajkumar’s career in the Indian Air Force spans several decades marked by significant innovation and commitment. After his retirement, he continued to impact India’s aerospace sector through research, authorship, and mentorship. His book, “The Tejas Story: The Light Combat Aircraft Project,” is a celebrated narrative detailing the journey of India’s indigenous fighter aircraft development.

The Indian Air Force highlighted his contributions, stating that they “embody the spirit of Atmanirbharta in defence aviation,” and emphasized that his work serves as an enduring source of inspiration for upcoming generations of aerospace engineers and pilots in India.

The Karnataka Rajyotsava Award is among the highest civilian honours bestowed by the state, recognising individuals who have made exceptional contributions across various fields. Air Marshal Rajkumar’s recent recognition further underscores his lifelong commitment to enhancing India’s aeronautical capabilities and promoting self-reliance in defence technology.
