Air Marshal Samir Jayasinha Pendse has officially taken over as the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) of the Indian Air Force’s Training Command, effective December 1, 2025. This appointment is seen as a pivotal addition to the IAF’s training and operational leadership framework, underscoring the ongoing commitment to bolster the efficiency and capabilities of the force.

A distinguished alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Air Marshal Pendse was commissioned into the Flying (Pilot) branch of the IAF on December 16, 1989. As a helicopter pilot, he has carved out a remarkable career spanning over 36 years, logging more than 5,100 hours of accident-free flying. This impressive record is a testament to his exceptional skills and professionalism within the aviation sector.

Throughout his extensive service, Air Marshal Pendse has held numerous command and staff positions, showcasing his versatility and leadership qualities. His tenure includes commanding two IAF bases, an Advance Headquarters, and a frontline helicopter unit. He has also made significant contributions to international peacekeeping efforts, having served on a United Nations Mission in Sudan, where he was involved in humanitarian operations aimed at restoring stability in the region.

In addition to his flying and leadership roles, Air Marshal Pendse is a graduate of the National Defence College (NDC) in Dhaka. His most recent position was that of Inspector General (Air) of the Border Security Force (BSF), where he was instrumental in overseeing the Aviation Arm of the Ministry of Home Affairs Air Wing, working to enhance its operational efficiency.

His exemplary service has not gone unnoticed, as he has received several prestigious awards. In 1997, he was honored with the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), followed by the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2015, both awarded by the President of India, recognizing his bravery and distinguished contributions to the Indian Air Force.

With his extensive experience and proven track record, Air Marshal Pendse’s appointment as SASO of the Training Command is anticipated to significantly enhance the IAF’s training framework, improve operational readiness, and foster the professional development of future air warriors.
