In a significant development for India’s national security, a civilian staff member of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been arrested on charges of leaking sensitive defense information to operatives in Pakistan. This arrest is seen as part of a more extensive espionage network that has raised concerns among intelligence agencies.
The accused, identified as Sumit Kumar, 36, worked as a Multi-Tasking Staff member at the Air Force Station in Chabua, Assam. His arrest followed a months-long investigation that began in January 2026 after authorities detained another suspect in Jaisalmer. This earlier arrest set off a chain of inquiries that ultimately linked Kumar to Pakistani intelligence.
Kumar was taken into custody during a coordinated operation involving Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence, and he was subsequently brought to Jaipur for comprehensive interrogation.
Initial investigations revealed that Kumar had been in contact with Pakistani handlers since 2023, allegedly transmitting classified military information in return for monetary compensation. The leaked intelligence is believed to comprise critical details about various Air Force installations, including those at Chabua and Nal (Bikaner), along with locations of fighter aircraft and missile systems. Furthermore, sensitive personal information regarding IAF personnel and officers was also reportedly compromised.
Compounding the seriousness of the situation, investigators found evidence indicating that Kumar not only provided sensitive information but also assisted in creating social media accounts for the Pakistani handlers, utilizing mobile numbers registered in his name. This aspect of the case underscores the sophistication of the espionage efforts and the risks posed by digital communications.
In light of these revelations, a case has been filed against Kumar under the Official Secrets Act of 1923, along with relevant provisions of the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Authorities now suspect that Kumar’s activities might be part of a broader Pakistan-backed espionage network operating within India. As investigations continue, intelligence agencies are working diligently to identify further operatives and connections tied to this unfolding network.
