Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has officially taken on the role of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) of the Indian Army, signifying a key leadership transition within the Army Headquarters.

Lt Gen Seth’s military career spans nearly four decades, marked by an impressive operational profile that encompasses extensive experience across varied terrains, notably in counter-insurgency operations. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986.

Throughout his distinguished career, Lt Gen Seth has been entrusted with several prestigious command positions. He has commanded an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, led an Armoured Brigade in a developed sector, and spearheaded a Counter Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, he has held command of the Sudarshan Chakra Corps and served as General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area. His capability as a leader has been further highlighted by his command of two operational Army Commands, namely the South Western Command and Southern Command.

In addition to his command roles, Lt Gen Seth has occupied various strategic and staff positions that underscore his multifaceted expertise. His experience includes serving as Brigade Major of an Independent Armoured Brigade and as an Operations Officer with the United Nations Mission in Angola. His tenure at Army Headquarters included roles as Assistant Military Secretary and Brigadier General Staff (Operations) at the South Western Command. He has also made significant contributions as Director General of Discipline, Ceremonial and Welfare.

Lt Gen Seth has actively engaged in capability development and modernization efforts within the Army. His influence in this area includes serving as Colonel for Capability Development of Mechanised Forces, Brigadier for Perspective Plans and Acquisition, and as Additional Director General for Capability Development.

His commitment to military education further sets him apart. He distinguished himself by topping the Junior Command Course and receiving the Best All Round Student Officer Medal at the Defence Services Staff College. Additionally, he has attended the Higher Command Course and National Defence College, and completed the Command and Staff Course in Paris.

With his extensive operational background and significant involvement in strategic planning and modernization initiatives, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth’s appointment as VCOAS is anticipated to bolster the Indian Army’s preparedness and advance its future capability development.
