In a significant advancement for India’s defense preparedness, three highway-based Emergency Landing Facilities (ELFs) are set to be established in Bihar, designed to accommodate advanced fighter jets including the Dassault Rafale and Sukhoi Su-30MKI, as well as transport aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. This initiative aims to bolster military readiness and response capabilities along crucial corridors.
The planned airstrips are strategically located in North Bihar, particularly near the international border with Nepal. This development is intended to enhance the rapid deployment of military resources and response times in critical situations.
Key projects include the Patna–Purnia Expressway, Bihar’s first expressway featuring an integrated airstrip. This reinforced, divider-free stretch will facilitate fighter jet landings, significantly boosting operational readiness. Another vital segment is the Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway, which will incorporate a strategic runway, thereby enhancing surveillance and military response capabilities along India’s northern frontier. Additionally, the Ramjanaki Marg, part of the Ayodhya–Janakpur corridor, will provide a 40 km airstrip stretch in Sitamarhi district, further solidifying border-area infrastructure.
The establishment of these ELFs carries immense military and strategic significance. They are designed to allow aircraft operations even if conventional airbases become targets during conflicts. Furthermore, the facilities will aid in the rapid deployment of troops and equipment, ensuring robust air defense along sensitive border regions. This initiative reflects a shift in military strategy where traditional airbases are increasingly seen as high-value targets.
From an engineering perspective, these airstrips will feature specially reinforced surfaces that are up to three times stronger than standard roads, allowing for aircraft operations across lengths of 3.5 to 5 kilometers. They will be constructed with obstruction-free zones to eliminate any potential hazards from poles, trees, or wires, and will include provisions for mobile air traffic control and refueling. Advanced traffic management systems will be implemented to ensure swift clearance for aircraft.
In addition to their military applications, these airstrips are anticipated to offer significant civil and disaster management benefits. They will serve as vital lifelines during floods in North Bihar, enabling rapid delivery of relief materials and improving emergency response capabilities during disasters.
This initiative is part of a broader national trend, with India previously showcasing similar capabilities in Uttar Pradesh, where successful fighter landings were conducted on expressways like Purvanchal and Agra-Lucknow.
The development of these highway airstrips in Bihar not only enhances national security but also contributes to disaster resilience and regional connectivity, marking a pivotal step in the creation of dual-use infrastructure.
