In a poignant ceremony that underscored the deep sense of loss felt by many, Lance Naik Vikas Kumar of the Indian Army was laid to rest with full military honours in his native Gankot village in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. The 27-year-old soldier, who tragically lost his life in an avalanche in Sikkim, was remembered not just as a soldier but as a dedicated family man.
As his mortal remains arrived in the village, thousands gathered to pay their final respects, a testament to the respect and admiration held for him in the community. The atmosphere was heavy with grief, especially as Vikas’s wife, Preeti, broke down at the sight of the coffin, encapsulating the profound personal loss endured by his family.
The final rites were performed at the sacred Rameshwar Ghat, accompanied by ceremonial elements that included the presence of military officials. Amid the solemnity, the crowd rallied in chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vikas Amar Rahe,” creating a powerful atmosphere that celebrated his life and sacrifice. District Magistrate Ashish Kumar Bhatgain and other officials were present to pay their tributes, marking the soldier’s immense contributions to the nation.
Lance Naik Kumar served in the Kumaon Regiment and was on patrol in Sikkim when he became a victim of the devastating avalanche on March 29, 2026. Having joined the Indian Army in 2017, Vikas Kumar was not only dedicated to his service but also looked forward to a future of family life, having married in 2023 and becoming a father to an eight-month-old child.
