Drone and Unexploded Warhead Discovered in Southern Finland

Finnish police reported on Saturday the discovery of a drone and an unexploded warhead in southern Finland, raising concerns about potential aerial incursions amidst heightened tensions in the region. The drone, resembling those previously retrieved in late March, is believed to have been misplaced due to interference linked to Russian actions, as per Ukrainian assertions.

The unmanned aircraft was located in a forested area of Iitti, a town in southern Finland, with police confirming its status in a statement provided to AFP. They noted that the drone matched the specifications of others found earlier in southeastern Finland. The discovery is part of an ongoing investigation into the origin and circumstances of the drone’s crash.

Within the secured zone surrounding the drone, the authorities also found an unexploded warhead. Military personnel have been dispatched to safely handle and neutralize the ordnance, emphasizing the need for caution in light of the potential hazards posed by unexploded military devices.

Fortunately, the drone was found approximately one kilometer (0.6 miles) from the nearest residential area, and police reported no injuries or damage to property resulting from its crash. This incident follows a series of similar occurrences where stray drones have descended into Finnish territory, including incidents on March 29, when two drones crashed, followed by another two days later.

Two of the drones recovered during those earlier incidents were confirmed to be of Ukrainian origin. In response to the situation, Ukraine issued an apology to Finland, clarifying that the drones likely strayed off course due to interference from Russian forces.

The current geopolitical climate has been marked by hostilities, with Ukrainian forces recently targeting Russian coastal infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland. This context heightens the scrutiny surrounding aerial activities in the region, underscoring the complexities of security and airspace integrity as tensions continue to escalate.
