Morocco Activates Barak MX Air Defense System Purchased from Israel

Slovakia has officially received its inaugural Barak MX multi-mission air and missile defense system, marking a significant step in enhancing the country’s defense capabilities. This acquisition is part of a contract signed in December 2024 with Israel Aerospace Industries, a state-owned company in Israel.

The first battery of this advanced system has been strategically deployed at an undisclosed location near essential energy infrastructure. According to Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák, the placement is critical, situated at an “intersection between our nuclear power plants.” This suggests a heightened focus on protecting key facilities such as the Jaslovské Bohunice and Mochovce nuclear power plants from potential aerial threats.

Following this deployment, the integration of the Barak MX system into the Slovak Armed Forces is set to take several weeks, with the process being supported by a team of Israeli specialists. Initial phases of skills transfer to Slovak troops have been completed, enabling them to commence training that will continue as the integration process unfolds.

The broader contract entails the acquisition of up to six Barak MX batteries, with an estimated total cost of 560 million euros (approximately $658.9 million). Full delivery of the system is expected by the end of this decade, though the timeline has experienced delays. The initial shipment, which was anticipated to arrive between late 2025 and early 2026, has been postponed due to what officials describe as a “complicated issue,” along with disruptions partly linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

The Barak MX system boasts capabilities to counter a wide array of aerial threats, including ballistic missiles, at ranges of up to 150 kilometers (93 miles). It has also been operational on Israeli Navy’s Sa’ar-class corvettes and integrated within the Israeli Air Force’s air defense network, showcasing its effectiveness and versatility as a defensive weapon system.
