Hailing from Suri village in the Marhun area of Himachal Pradesh, Kumar was raised in a family rooted in patriotism and discipline. Born around 1991 as the youngest of three siblings to humble parents — a retired Public Works Department employee and a devoted homemaker — he nurtured a passion for physical fitness and military life from a young age. Inspired by the valor of soldiers from his region, Kumar aimed to don the olive green uniform and serve his country.
After completing his education in and around his village, he embarked on a journey to join the armed forces, a dream he realized in 2012. Throughout his military career, despite the demanding nature of his service, he remained closely connected to his family—marrying Smt Bindu Devi and becoming a father to two daughters, Shanvi and Shanvika. Renowned among friends and relatives as a caring son and devoted husband, he masterfully balanced the responsibilities of family life with the extraordinary challenges posed by his service in the Special Forces.
Kumar’s selection into the elite 9 Para (Special Forces) came after rigorous training, characterized by its physical and mental challenges, which only a small fraction of candidates successfully navigate. Earning the maroon beret and Balidan badge, symbols of exceptional military capability and sacrifice, he engaged in numerous operations over the next eleven years, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. His exemplary conduct and operational achievements earned him respect and recognition within the unit, leading him to rise to the rank of Naik.
One notable phase of his service was his tenure with the 51 Special Action Group (SAG) of the National Security Guard (NSG), India’s premier counter-terrorism unit. Here, Kumar distinguished himself as an extraordinary operator, eventually earning the prestigious “Top Men” badge, a testament to his combat efficiency and performance. His participation in advanced training courses further honed his capabilities, underscoring his readiness for complex and hostile missions.
Beyond the battlefield, Kumar was also a remarkable athlete and marksman. Competing at national and international levels, he garnered accolades in athletics and shooting events in countries such as Germany and Singapore. During early May 2023, intensified anti-terror operations were launched in response to intelligence on the movement of heavily armed militants in the forests of Rajouri. These terrorists had previously been linked to a deadly ambush that resulted in the deaths of five soldiers in April. Given the gravity of the situation, teams from the 9 Para (SF) were deployed for the operation amidst the treacherous terrain of the Pir Panjal region.
On May 5, special forces made contact with the terrorists hidden in a fortified cave. As troops advanced, the terrorists unleashed a barrage of gunfire, sparking a fierce gun battle. Naik Arvind Kumar led the team into the fray, showcasing remarkable courage.
As the intense skirmish unfolded, Special Forces launched aggressive actions to neutralize the enemy. However, the terrorists detonated an explosive device within their stronghold, inflicting severe injuries on several soldiers, including Kumar, who ultimately succumbed to his wounds while bravely fighting for the nation.
Kumar’s legacy, sadly, included the loss of four additional soldiers from his unit, highlighting the enormous risks faced by those serving in such critical roles—a stark reflection of the dangers inherent in counter-terrorism missions in Jammu and Kashmir.
Following his sacrifice, the nation mourned as Kumar’s mortal remains returned to his village on May 6, 2023. Thousands gathered to pay their respects, and full military honors were rendered during his cremation on May 7. Emotional tributes filled the air as the Tricolor was presented to his wife amidst chants of honor for the fallen soldier. The Himachal Pradesh government pledged financial support to his family, including a government job for his widow, while renaming a local school in his honor.
In January 2024, Kumar was posthumously recognized with a Mention-in-Despatches award for his bravery and dedicated service during counter-terrorism operations. His name was inscribed in the Roll of Honour at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, ensuring his memory lives on.
