Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair, AVSM, VSM, has made history as a trailblazer within the Indian Armed Forces. As a highly accomplished military doctor and medical administrator, she has become the first woman officer to assume the role of Director General Medical Services (Army), a pivotal position within the Indian Army. Born in September 1964 in New Delhi at the Army Base Hospital, Lieutenant General Nair hails from a military family with deep ties to medicine. Her father, Air Commodore Vinod Kumar Saxena, was a noted specialist in community medicine, while her mother, Manorama Saxena, instilled values of discipline and service in the family. Her brother, Air Commodore Raj Saxena, further solidified their family’s legacy in military medicine.
Her early life was profoundly shaped by personal experiences, most notably a serious illness at the age of three. Nurtured by her father’s attentive care during her recovery, this episode ignited her aspiration to pursue a career in medicine.
Growing up as the daughter of an Air Force officer allowed her to experience life in various cities throughout India. Lieutenant General Nair’s journey in medicine began in earnest at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, where she graduated in December 1985. Throughout her career, Lieutenant General Nair advanced her qualifications, completing postgraduate studies in Family Medicine and acquiring diplomas in Maternal and Child Health as well as Health Care Management. She also gained experience in areas such as Medical Informatics and specialized training with various militaries, enhancing her capabilities in handling complex medical situations.
Despite her commission in the Army Medical Corps, she served extensively with the Indian Air Force Medical Services, illustrating the collaborative nature of military healthcare. Her roles encompassed clinical, administrative, and command responsibilities, marking her ascent in military medicine.
Her operational experience is noteworthy, having participated in crucial military exercises such as Operation Brass Tacks, Operation Vijay, and Operation Parakram. In these high-stakes environments, she was involved in casualty management and emergency medical response.
A significant highlight of her career was serving as the Principal Medical Officer for both the Western Air Command and the Training Command of the Indian Air Force, thereby becoming the first woman to occupy these prominent roles. On October 23, 2023, she was promoted to the rank of Air Marshal and appointed as Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces). This historic appointment not only recognized her accomplishments but also reinforced the representation of women in senior military positions.
Her leadership continued to shine when, on August 1, 2024, she became the first woman to serve as Director General Medical Services (Army).
