Russia and Ukraine Exchange Drone Strikes Amid Truce Announcement

Russia launched a significant missile and drone assault on Kyiv early Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, according to local authorities. The attack follows President Vladimir Putin’s warnings of retaliation amid ongoing tensions following strikes in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.

Witnesses in the Ukrainian capital reported multiple loud explosions during the early hours, and military officials revealed that the assault comprised approximately 600 drones and 90 missiles. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that two fatalities occurred within the city, with 56 others injured. Additionally, the head of the Kyiv region reported two additional deaths and nine injuries in nearby areas.

Ukrainian air defenses proved effective, intercepting a total of 549 drones and 55 missiles. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the barrage included a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile, referred to as the “Oreshnik,” targeting critical infrastructure. He noted that the attack caused significant damage, including strikes on a water supply facility, a marketplace, and several residential buildings and schools.

Local reports indicated that residents of Kyiv felt the impact of the blasts, with many seeking refuge in underground metro stations. City officials urged residents to remain sheltered, as fires erupted in various locations due to the strikes.

Prior to the attack, both Ukrainian authorities and the US embassy had indicated that a major offensive on Kyiv could occur, particularly after Ukraine’s forces conducted a drone strike on Starobilsk in eastern Ukraine—an area under Russian control—resulting in civilian casualties. Following this strike, Russia’s foreign ministry warned that those responsible would face severe consequences.

As tensions escalated, President Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine was observing signs of a coordinated strike preparation from Russia, which included potential attacks on Kyiv. The US embassy corroborated these concerns, stating it had received information regarding a possible imminent assault.

The conflict had taken a grave turn with the earlier drone strike on Starobilsk, which had resulted in a substantial death toll of at least 18 individuals, predominantly young women. Videos from the scene showed rescuers working through the rubble of a dormitory that had been struck.

Starobilsk has been under Russian control since the early months of the 2022 invasion and lies approximately 65 kilometers from the front line. In recent months, Kyiv has increased its drone capabilities, targeting not only Russian-occupied territories but also hitting infrastructure within Russia, arguing that these operations are retaliatory actions against ongoing Russian aggressions.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia has consistently launched missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, striking a range of civilian and infrastructural sites. Moscow continues to deny allegations of targeting civilians as the war drags on with peacemaking efforts having stalled significantly in recent months, compounded by shifting global geopolitical focus.
