In a tragic turn of events, Leading Mechanical Engineer Amit Singh Rana, a Shaurya Chakra awardee and esteemed commando of the Indian Navy’s MARCOS unit, has lost his life in a road accident in Himachal Pradesh. Hailing from Kangra district, Rana was renowned for his exceptional bravery during critical counter-terrorism missions in Jammu and Kashmir, a fact that has left a deep sense of loss within the defence community and among citizens nationwide.
Rana, who was born and raised in the village of Laharu in the Jwalamukhi tehsil of Kangra district, came from a family steeped in military tradition. Following this legacy, he joined the Indian Navy and excelled as a Leading Mechanical Engineer, eventually earning a coveted position within the elite MARCOS—a unit recognized for its demanding training in various special operations across diverse environments.
His military career was marked by significant acts of gallantry, particularly during Operation Rakshak in Jammu and Kashmir. Official records highlight his heroic contributions during two pivotal operations, named Operation Danna and Operation Shok Baba, during which he played a key role in the elimination of eight foreign terrorists.
During Operation Danna, he served alongside Lieutenant Commander Mahesh Kumar, demonstrating remarkable courage by taking down a terrorist in close-quarters combat while providing cover for his officer. This operation culminated in the successful neutralization of terrorists and the capture of substantial war materials.
Rana’s most significant act of valor occurred during Operation Shok Baba in September 2018, where he, alongside the 14 Rashtriya Rifles, engaged in a demanding cordon-and-search operation. Faced with heavy enemy fire, Rana volunteered to approach a cow shed housing terrorists with an improvised explosive device. His selfless actions, executed under intense pressure, led to the destruction of the shelter and the elimination of three terrorists, all while ensuring the safety of his team.
For his bravery, tactical skill, and unwavering dedication to duty, Amit Singh Rana was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry accolade. This prestigious award was announced by the Ministry of Defence on August 14, 2019, as part of the Independence Day celebrations, and was later presented by then-President Ram Nath Kovind in a formal investiture ceremony. His accomplishments greatly contributed to the honor of the Indian Navy and the special forces, along with pride for his home state of Himachal Pradesh.
