Ukraine Approves Plan for Indigenous Long-Range Missile Development

Ukraine has made significant strides in bolstering its military capabilities by approving a comprehensive military development plan aimed at producing domestically manufactured warheads capable of striking targets up to 2,000 kilometers (approximately 1,243 miles) away. This initiative is part of a broader strategy titled the Concept for the Development of Missile Forces and Artillery, which targets the mass production of indigenous ballistic and cruise missiles over the next several years.

The new technologies resulting from this plan are set to be integrated with autonomous platforms, enhancing Ukraine’s ability to deploy lethal capabilities that can effectively penetrate deep into enemy territory. General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, emphasized that this integration of unmanned systems would create a balanced long-range fire system capable of ensuring the destruction of designated targets.

As part of this development, the Ukrainian military is prioritizing the deployment of locally-built projectiles, positioning them as the backbone of its artillery units. This move comes as Kyiv seeks to phase out aging Soviet-era weaponry, which has become increasingly unreliable and difficult to maintain. A key component of this strategy is to reduce reliance on foreign weaponry—an operational challenge identified by Syrskyi. The limitations set by complex logistics, insufficient weapon ranges, and a lack of effective reconnaissance solutions have further necessitated this shift towards self-sufficiency.

The new military plan also underscores the importance of establishing a robust reconnaissance network to enhance targeting capabilities and expedite the flow of vital battlefield intelligence. “Modern warfare has proven that the effectiveness of artillery directly depends on the quality of intelligence and the speed of information transmission,” Syrskyi remarked, highlighting the interconnected nature of effective military operations.

In response to the current combat landscape, where drones and precision-guided weapons are becoming increasingly prevalent, Syrskyi reiterated the enduring significance of artillery in modern warfare. He asserted, “Artillery was, is, and will remain one of the key factors of success on the battlefield,” underscoring its ability to deliver decisive firepower across various terrains and under different weather conditions. He stressed that artillery continues to play a crucial role in both offensive operations and deterring armed aggression against Ukraine.
