Meet Major Laichat Wangpan: From Sepoy to the First Wancho Officer to Attain the Rank of Major

In the remote hills of Longding district in Arunachal Pradesh, Major Laichat Paul Wangpan has etched his name in history as the first commissioned officer from the Wancho community in the Indian Army, and now, he has further distinguished himself as the first to achieve the rank of Major.

Wangpan’s journey began in Longphong village, where he was raised in a modest Wancho family. Despite limited financial resources, he pursued his education at a government school, completing formal studies up to Class 8. His family’s economic challenges necessitated that he enter the workforce at a young age, leading him to serve as a night watchman for the General Reserve Engineer Force under the Border Roads Organisation. This experience not only instilled a strong work ethic in him but also provided a glimpse into the disciplined world of military service.

With a resolute ambition to serve his country, Wangpan enlisted in the Indian Army as a sepoy. This decision marked the inception of his transformation. Alongside his rigorous military duties, he also prioritized education, completing his secondary, senior secondary, and college-level studies through distance learning. This balancing act required great discipline and time management, but his commitment to becoming a commissioned officer remained steadfast.

Observing the officers he served alongside sparked a desire in him to take on greater responsibilities. Wangpan diligently prepared for the Services Selection Board examination while continuing his military duties. Despite the competitive and challenging nature of this path, his determination led him to success; he was chosen for pre-commission training at the Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai.

In June 2020, Wangpan proudly became a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, marking a significant milestone for the Wancho community and Arunachal Pradesh. His achievement was lauded throughout the state, with congratulatory messages from public figures, including Arunachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who referred to it as a proud moment.

After his commissioning, he was assigned to the Sikh Light Infantry, a regiment known for its valiant legacy and renowned service record. His integration into this prestigious unit highlighted the Indian Army’s commitment to inclusivity and unity, transcending cultural and regional divides.

Over the subsequent years, Wangpan demonstrated unwavering dedication to his duties, leading to his promotion to Major in June 2026. This ascent not only marked another historic achievement as the first Major from the Wancho community but also garnered widespread recognition and pride from various leaders and citizens throughout Arunachal Pradesh.

The announcement of his rank promotion was celebrated by many, including local political figures and community representatives, who emphasized the motivational impact of his story on the youth of the region. Major Wangpan has quickly become an inspirational figure, particularly for those hailing from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. His experiences serve as a testament that hard work, determination, and sacrifice can lead to remarkable achievements—regardless of one’s starting point.

In one notable interaction with the Longding District Students’ Union, he recounted his struggles and the essential life lessons he learned along the way, urging young people to approach their ambitions with grit and diligence. His experience in overcoming adversity has sparked hope among aspiring defense personnel, illuminating the pathway to success for many youngsters from similarly humble beginnings.

Major Wangpan’s rise through the ranks beautifully encapsulates the ethos of the Indian Army—where merit and personal dedication are the true measures of success, irrespective of one’s background. His journey symbolizes the strength of the human spirit and serves as an enduring inspiration for all those dreaming of a future in service to the nation. Through his relentless pursuit of excellence and his accomplishments, he continues to pave the way for future generations, demonstrating that even the most challenging circumstances can be transformed into powerful opportunities for growth and achievement.
