Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar Appointed GOC-in-C Southern Command, to Take Charge on July 1

Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar, AVSM, VSM, has been appointed as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Southern Command, with effect from July 1, 2026. Currently serving as the General Officer Commanding of the Kharga Corps, which is based in Ambala and recognized as one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations, he takes on a significant role that highlights his distinguished military career.

The Southern Command, one of the oldest and geographically extensive commands in the Indian Army, is headquartered in Pune and is responsible for military preparedness in extensive regions of western, central, and southern India, encompassing peninsular and coastal areas. This command includes critical formations such as the Jodhpur-based Konark Corps and the Bhopal-based Sudarshan Chakra Corps, along with various training establishments and logistics formations. Its operational responsibilities span conventional deterrence, coastal security, humanitarian assistance, and coordination with civil authorities.

Lt Gen Pushkar brings over 35 years of experience to his new role. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and has completed higher military education at the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad and the National Defence College in New Delhi. His career highlights include commanding an armoured regiment, a key independent armoured brigade, and an infantry division in the western sector, which has endowed him with extensive expertise in mechanized warfare and large troop management.

Before leading the Kharga Corps, he served as the Director General of the Territorial Army at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), where he played a crucial role in overseeing the operational capabilities of the army’s reserve components. His international assignments include posting with the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan and serving as the Defence and Military Attaché at the Embassy of India in Moscow, enhancing his exposure to military diplomacy and international defense cooperation.

As he prepares to assume command of the Southern Command, Lt Gen Pushkar’s record includes a particular emphasis on combat readiness, technological integration, and realistic training exercises. His leadership has been marked by a focus on incorporating advanced technologies like drones and precision systems into operational strategies. He has advocated for military leaders to adapt to the evolving character of warfare, stressing the importance of rapid decision-making and the effective use of emerging technologies.

His tenure as commander of the Kharga Corps was characterized by operational agility and intense training exercises. Following Operation Sindoor, he commended the professionalism and preparedness of his troops, reinforcing his commitment to a modern, technology-enabled military approach.

Lt Gen Pushkar succeeds Lt Gen Sandeep Jain, who has led the Southern Command since April 1, 2026. A formal transition ceremony is set for July 1 at the command headquarters in Pune. The appointment comes at a time of significant transformation within the Indian Army, focusing on joint operations, modernization, and collaborative initiatives with the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, given the command’s strategic positioning near vital military and industrial assets.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is Lt Gen Pushkar’s brother-in-law, has publicly expressed pride in his appointment, praising his military acumen and dedication to the armed forces and congratulating him on this notable achievement. Lt Gen Pushkar’s extensive experience is anticipated to play a pivotal role in guiding the Southern Command through its crucial upcoming challenges.
