Major Rinchen Dolma Kolto

Major Rinchen Dolma Kolto (Retired) has established a remarkable legacy through her military service, adventurous pursuits, and dedicated commitment to societal well-being. Widely regarded as the first woman Army officer from the Leh region and the first female skydiver from Ladakh, Kolto has emerged as an inspiring figure for young women considering a career in the Indian Armed Forces.

Her extraordinary journey began in Spituk, a village near Leh, where military personnel were a prevalent part of her childhood landscape. The presence of officers in uniform instilled in her a fascination that shaped her future. Over the course of a decade, she served as an officer in the Indian Army, completed 54 solo skydives, and received recognition from the Chief of the Army Staff, reflecting her courage, discipline, and unwavering dedication to service.

Her achievements were nationally recognized once again in June 2026 when she was awarded the Veteran Achievers Award by Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, during his visit to the Fire and Fury Corps in Ladakh. Kolto was among five distinguished veterans honored for their military service and ongoing contributions to society, alongside notable figures such as Colonel Tondup Wangail and Subedar Major and Honorary Captains Sonam Morup and Tashi Chhepal, Vir Chakra.

Collectively, the veterans were acknowledged for their initiatives aimed at supporting ex-servicemen, Veer Naris, and military families. Their efforts have significantly contributed to healthcare delivery in remote regions, skill development, community welfare, and assistance for veterans needing medical care. The award underscored the message that service to the nation often extends beyond military uniforms, with veterans frequently applying the values instilled during service to improve the lives of those around them.

Major Kolto’s path to success is rooted in her childhood experiences, particularly during the 1999 Kargil War, which solidified her desire to wear the Army uniform. Observing both male and female pilots in action fueled her determination to pursue a career in the Armed Forces. Growing up in an environment steeped in military tradition also instilled in her a deep awareness of the responsibility and sacrifices entailed in such a career, shifting her perceptions from seeing the Army as just a profession to recognizing it as a meaningful opportunity to serve her nation and represent women from Ladakh.

Her involvement in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during school and college provided her with early military exposure, emphasizing discipline, physical training, and teamwork. This structured environment helped her bridge the gap often faced by students from remote areas, granting her the confidence to pursue her ambition.

In 2010, Major Kolto received her call letter from the Indian Army, commencing a year-long officer training program that would eventually lead her to a decade of dedicated service. Her commissioning represented a historic achievement, as very few women had previously embraced the role of commissioned officers from the Leh region. The journey was marked by significant challenges, including societal expectations and limited female representation in the military.

Beyond her military duties, Major Kolto’s adventurous spirit led her to skydiving. She qualified for solo jumps and became the first female skydiver from Ladakh, completing 54 jumps across various locations in India and Dubai. For her, skydiving signified more than mere thrills; it was a transformative experience that tested her abilities in managing fear and making critical decisions independently. Her achievement has broadened the horizon for women in her region, proving that pursuing such unconventional ambitions is possible.

Guided by the principle of “If everyone else can do it, why can’t I?”, Major Kolto’s approach to life and service has encouraged her to overcome challenges and explore new opportunities. Despite her success, she emphasizes the importance of careful consideration before embarking on a military career. Future aspirants should seek genuine interest in the profession, understand the rigorous demands associated with military life, and maintain resilience against difficulties.

After a decade of service, Kolto chose to leave the Army, seeking to dedicate more time to her family and achieve a better balance in her life. Though she concluded her active military career, she remains committed to public service, embodying the values cultivated during her years in uniform. The recent recognition she received highlights the ongoing impact of veterans in supporting their communities.

Major Kolto encourages aspiring female candidates, particularly from remote regions, to embrace their potential and pursue military careers through various entry pathways. She stresses the importance of physical fitness, mental resilience, patience, and a positive attitude, qualities essential for navigating the rigorous demands of military training and service.

Her journey offers powerful lessons about ambition and capability. It illustrates that geographic isolation does not confine dreams, as evidenced by her trajectory from a small village to a recognized officer and adventurer. Moreover, her story reinforces the notion that national service can manifest in myriad forms, with the principles learned in uniform continuing to guide contributions to society long after one’s active duty ends.

Major Rinchen Dolma Kolto’s achievements have shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations of women in Ladakh. Her legacy inspires young women and individuals from remote communities to view limitations as challenges to be overcome through discipline, preparation, and perseverance, affirming that one’s background should not define their potential.
