In a commendable recognition of exemplary service, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth honored Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Khour, Satish Sharma, at the Sunderbani Brigade for his pivotal role during Operation Sindoor. This operation entailed one of the largest civilian evacuation efforts along the Line of Control (LoC), aimed at safeguarding thousands of residents amidst intense cross-border shelling and rapidly changing security dynamics.
Throughout Operation Sindoor, Satish Sharma played a crucial role in supervising the evacuation of over 73,000 civilians from 53 villages situated within an 8-kilometre radius of the Line of Control. This operation not only encompassed a majority of the estimated 86,000 residents residing in vulnerable areas but also demonstrated an impressive and well-coordinated response to the escalating crisis.
Under Sharma’s guidance, approximately 17,000 displaced individuals found refuge in relief camps established to provide shelter and essential support. The complexities of the evacuation and relief efforts necessitated meticulous coordination among various entities, including the civil administration, the Indian Army, local authorities, and emergency response teams. This collaboration ensured the safe transportation of civilians, despite the challenging conditions on the ground.
Officials commended Sharma’s relentless commitment, noting that he remained on-site throughout the operation. His leadership was particularly crucial as heavy shelling, damaged infrastructure, and blocked roads posed significant obstacles to rescue efforts. By closely working with Army units and field teams, he continuously assessed the shifting situation, facilitating timely decisions that played a crucial role in protecting vulnerable communities.
Sharma’s proactive leadership is credited with saving at least 80 lives, as many residents were evacuated just before their homes fell victim to shelling. Remarkably, no civilian fatalities were recorded in the Khour Sub-Division during Operation Sindoor, underscoring a significant humanitarian achievement achieved under extremely difficult conditions.
