In a significant event highlighting the connection between civilians and the Armed Forces of India, President Droupadi Murmu virtually flagged off the inaugural President’s Bodyguard (PBG) Soldierathon from the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. The ceremony was graced by General (Dr) V.K. Singh (Retd), Governor of Mizoram and the initiative’s patron. As part of the occasion, the President also unveiled a Special Postal Cover to commemorate this historic run.
The Soldierathon was held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment, running under the theme “Supporting Real Heroes – the Armed Forces of India.” With a vision encapsulated in the tagline “Run for Soldiers, Run with Soldiers,” the event aims to honor the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of Indian soldiers. It sought to foster a sense of community between civilians and the Armed Forces, encouraging widespread participation as a show of solidarity.
In her remarks on social media, the President emphasized that the Soldierathon serves as a unique platform to bridge the gap between citizens and the military. It aligns with national initiatives promoting fitness and healthy living, while also instilling a sense of national pride amongst participants, all while paying tribute to those who serve and protect the nation.
This inaugural event marked a special occasion as it celebrated the 253-year legacy of the President’s Bodyguard, the senior-most regiment of the Indian Armed Forces. The regiment was established in 1773 under Governor-General Warren Hastings, initially operating as the Governor’s Bodyguard. Over the years, it evolved through various titles and functions, ultimately becoming the President’s Bodyguard following India’s Independence and the adoption of the Constitution in 1950.
Notably, the PBG is renowned as the world’s only Airborne Cavalry Regiment. Its personnel are trained as both paratroopers and tankmen, allowing them to perform a multiplicity of roles. In addition to their ceremonial duties as the President’s personal troops, PBG members are operationally ready and frequently serve in demanding environments like the Siachen Glacier. The regiment includes around 200 personnel and about 100 horses, embodying India’s rich equestrian military heritage alongside contemporary armored and airborne capabilities.
The timing of the Soldierathon is poignant, marking 27 years since the valorous Kargil War of 1999, thereby adding a layer of remembrance for the sacrifices made during that conflict.
The event itself offered races in three categories—3 km, 5 km, and 10 km—making it inclusive for seasoned runners, beginners, families, students, and corporate teams. Participants had the unique opportunity to run alongside active soldiers, experiencing aspects of military culture enriched by performances from the Indian Army. As part of the broader Soldierathon movement, which is promoted by Fitistan, the event emphasizes ideals of service, discipline, and national spirit. Major (Dr) Surendra Poonia, VSM (ex-Special Forces and former PBG member), described the Soldierathon as a personal homage to the regiment that instilled values of courage, discipline, and selfless service in him.
Proceeds from the PBG Soldierathon are directed towards supporting the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre of the Armed Forces, providing welfare for the children of battle casualties, and other soldier-centric causes. A portion of the funds will specifically benefit the horses and troops of the President’s Bodyguard, which helps to maintain both its operational readiness and equestrian traditions. Wonder Cement played a crucial role as a partner for this Delhi edition.
General V.K. Singh’s attendance highlighted the initiative’s significance, as he has been a longstanding advocate for initiatives that connect the armed forces with the public. The ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, featuring military personnel in ceremonial attire, added dignity to the flag-off.
The Soldierathon transcends mere physical activity, sending a powerful message that everyday citizens can actively stand with the “real heroes” of the nation. By intertwining fitness, remembrance, and direct support for welfare causes, the event reinforces the shared responsibility of national security and military heritage. It also resonates with the Fit India movement, which encourages youth to adopt sports and reject drugs.
For those aspiring to serve in the defense sector, events like the PBG Soldierathon serve as vital reminders of the rich traditions of the Indian Armed Forces, from the ceremonial brilliance of the President’s Bodyguard to the quiet resolve of soldiers stationed in challenging environments. The inaugural edition has firmly established a foundation for future iterations, ensuring that the spirit of “Run for Soldiers, Run with Soldiers” continues to inspire across the nation.
