Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has restarted the production of the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft at its Nashik facility in Maharashtra. Under the latest plan, HAL will manufacture 12 additional Su-30MKI aircraft for the Indian Air Force, with deliveries expected to continue until 2029. The first aircraft is likely to be delivered during 2027–28.
HAL Restarts Su-30MKI Production At Nashik For The Indian Air Force
The Su-30MKI is a twin-engine, multirole combat aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force. It was developed through an arrangement involving Russia and has been produced in India by HAL under a licence-production agreement.
The aircraft forms an important part of India’s fighter fleet and is designed to perform a variety of combat missions.
HAL’s Nashik Production Line
HAL’s Nashik division has considerable experience in manufacturing the Su-30MKI. Under the earlier licence-production programme, the facility produced 222 Su-30MKI aircraft for the Indian Air Force.
The production line was subsequently put on hold as the facility shifted its focus towards other activities, including aircraft maintenance and repair as well as Light Combat Aircraft production.
The decision to restart Su-30MKI manufacturing will therefore bring the Nashik facility back into active production of the aircraft.
Why Are 12 New Su-30MKIs Being Built?
The contract for manufacturing the 12 aircraft was signed in December 2024. The new fighters are intended to compensate for Su-30MKI aircraft that have been lost in accidents.
Reports have cited different figures for the value of the contract, including approximately ₹11,000 crore and ₹13,500 crore. The new aircraft are expected to contain a significant proportion of Indian-made components and systems, with indigenous content estimated in the supplied material at 50% to 62.6%.
This increased indigenous content is important for strengthening India’s domestic defence-manufacturing ecosystem.
Planned Modernisation of the Su-30MKI Fleet
Apart from producing new aircraft, India is also preparing a major upgrade programme for its existing Su-30MKI fleet.
The proposed modernisation programme is estimated at around ₹60,000 crore and is expected to be implemented in two phases.
Phase I
The first phase is expected to focus on improvements such as:
- New avionics
- An indigenous radar
- Electronic-warfare systems
Phase II
The second phase is expected to introduce advanced flight-control systems, further improving the capabilities of the aircraft.
The modernisation effort is intended to keep India’s existing Su-30MKI fleet technologically relevant while increasing the role of indigenous systems.
What Is Licence Production?
Licence production means that an Indian manufacturer produces a foreign-designed defence platform under an authorised agreement with the original country or company.
In the case of the Su-30MKI, HAL has manufactured the aircraft in India under an arrangement involving Russian technology and design.
Licence production allows domestic industry to gain manufacturing experience and gradually increase its ability to produce components and systems locally.
What Does Indigenous Content Mean?
Indigenous content refers to the proportion of a defence platform’s components, systems, equipment or sub-assemblies that are manufactured or developed within India.
A higher indigenous-content percentage can reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and support India’s objective of strengthening self-reliance in defence production.
Significance for India’s Defence Sector
The revival of the Su-30MKI production line at Nashik has significance beyond the manufacture of 12 additional aircraft.
It can help maintain India’s industrial capability for producing the Su-30MKI, increase domestic participation in the aircraft’s manufacturing ecosystem and support the wider objective of increasing indigenous content in defence platforms.
At the same time, the proposed modernisation of the existing fleet would allow India to upgrade aircraft already in service rather than relying only on new fighter acquisitions.
