CBI Escort Outside Srinagar Municipal Corporation

Srinagar, October 15, 2026: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sheikh Jameel Mohammad, a ward officer of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) who was holding charge of Ward 18 (Safakadal), after he was allegedly caught while accepting a bribe of ₹10,000 in Srinagar.

Officials said the CBI acted on a complaint and set up a trap before apprehending the officer. Some reports have identified him as Jameel Ahmad Sheikh; contemporaneous coverage indicates that both spellings refer to the same individual.

Case Registered Under Prevention of Corruption Act

A case has been registered at the CBI Police Station, Srinagar, under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The initial reports do not disclose what the complaint concerned or what official work the money was allegedly linked to.

Part of Wider Action in Srinagar

The arrest comes amid ongoing CBI action relating to alleged corruption in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Earlier this year, the agency had carried out trap operations and registered cases involving other SMC personnel in connection with alleged bribe demands tied to official clearances and the processing of bills.

The investigation is continuing. Citizens in Jammu and Kashmir who face demands for bribes by public servants are being encouraged to report such matters to the CBI or the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
