Indian Army Agniveer Mahesh Kumar Muhal Dies During Treatment in Odisha Army Hospital

A young Agniveer from Rajasthan’s Churu district has died while receiving treatment at an Army hospital in Odisha, according to information shared by his family and reported locally. Mahesh Kumar Muhal, who had joined the Indian Army less than four months earlier, was training at the Army Air Defence Centre in Gopalpur when he fell ill.

What the family has said

Mahesh, 21, was from Pithisar village in Churu district. He had joined the Indian Army as an Agniveer in Artillery Air Defence on 20 June 2026 and was undergoing training in Odisha. His father, Lalchand, said an Army officer informed the family on Thursday that Mahesh’s condition had worsened after he lost consciousness with a fever and was admitted to the Army hospital in Brahmapur (Berhampur).

According to the family, medical tests did not confirm dengue, although the symptoms were said to resemble it. Lalchand was travelling towards Odisha at the time, having begun his journey by train towards Delhi to catch a flight, when he received news of his son’s death around 1:30 a.m.

Background and family details

Mahesh had completed his BA before joining the Army. He is survived by his father and a younger brother, Nirmal, who is a first-year BA student at Lohia College in Churu. Family members said Mahesh had spoken to them the previous Monday and had expressed his readiness to take responsibility for the household.

Army officials reportedly told the family that the mortal remains reached Delhi on Saturday and were expected to arrive in Pithisar village on Sunday. The news led to mourning in the village, where residents gathered at the family’s home to offer condolences, and local representatives also paid tribute.

What is known so far

The Army Air Defence Centre at Gopalpur is among the key training establishments for Agniveers inducted under the Agnipath scheme into the Army Air Defence arm. No official statement from the Indian Army on the circumstances of Mahesh’s death was immediately available in public reports, so the currently available details are based on the family’s account shared with local media.

The incident has drawn grief in Churu, where Mahesh was remembered as a young man who had recently fulfilled his aspiration to serve in the Army.
