Amandeep Singh Mathon, 35, from Kapurthala in Punjab, has completed training at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Officer Training School and has been commissioned as a Pilot Officer. The development adds a new chapter to a family that has served in uniform across generations, first in India and now in Australia.
Family roots in military service
According to the report, Amandeep studied at the Army School in Kapurthala before moving with his family to Australia nearly two decades ago. His father, Sewa Singh, and grandfather, Nirmal Singh, both served in the Indian Army. His mother’s father and brother also served in the Indian Army. The family now lives in Melbourne.
Brothers in uniform
Amandeep is one of three brothers, and two of them are serving in the RAAF. His younger brother, Kamalpreet, was commissioned as a Flying Officer (Aeronautical Engineer) in 2025 after completing the Initial Officer Course at the Officer Training School in Sale, Victoria. Their elder brother, Sarabjit Singh Mathon, earlier served in the Australian Army and now works as a police officer with the New South Wales Police Force.
What the family said
Speaking to The Tribune from Australia, Amandeep’s mother, Amarjeet Kaur, said the family’s defence background shaped her sons’ path. She said they arrived in Australia on student visas and worked hard while balancing jobs and studies before undergoing training to join the forces. She also said, “It is my husband’s defence background and my sons’ upbringing in that environment that strengthened their resolve.”
After his passing-out parade, Amandeep reportedly said that the uniform was “not just a uniform for me; it’s a way of life.” The family has since received many congratulatory messages, according to the report.
Service as a continuing legacy
Sewa Singh said that the value of service has long been part of the Mathon family. He noted that both he and Nirmal Singh served in the Indian Army, and said the tradition is now continuing in Australia through the younger generation. He also said Australia gave the family opportunities to build a new life, and that their gratitude reinforces their sense of duty.
The commissioning of Amandeep Singh Mathon, following that of his brother Kamalpreet, reflects how one Indian-origin family’s military tradition has carried from India into Australia’s defence services.
