Port Blair, November 1, 2026: The Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) has brought engineers, planners and other stakeholders into a common forum through Works Symposium 2026, held by Headquarters Chief Engineer, Andaman and Nicobar Zone, on October 29 and 30. The event focused on how defence infrastructure in the island territories can be made more sustainable, resilient and ready for future requirements.
Theme centred on sustainability and ecological stewardship
The symposium was conducted under the theme “Sustainable Islands, Resilient Future: Future Ready Infrastructure with Ecological Stewardship.” According to the information shared, the sessions examined how modern engineering methods can be aligned with environmental conservation while still meeting the operational and logistical demands of island-based defence infrastructure.
Key discussion areas included emerging construction technologies, green infrastructure, renewable energy, digital engineering, sustainable water and waste management, and the creation of resilient airfields, ports, marine facilities and underground infrastructure. These subjects were considered in the context of the unique conditions faced in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Challenges of island infrastructure were a major focus
Participants paid special attention to the geographical, environmental and logistical constraints that affect construction and maintenance in the island chain. The discussions explored innovative technologies and sustainable engineering practices that could support operational readiness while limiting environmental impact.
The role of collaboration was also emphasised. The symposium highlighted cooperation between the Military Engineer Services (MES), academic institutions and industry partners as a way to identify practical solutions, develop pilot projects and turn new ideas into workable strategies for climate-resilient defence infrastructure.

Strategic importance of the island region
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold a strategically significant place in the Indian Ocean Region, making reliable and sustainable military infrastructure important for operational capability and long-term defence preparedness. In that context, the symposium was aimed at strengthening the infrastructure base that supports the command’s wider strategic role.
The initiative reflects the Andaman and Nicobar Command’s effort to align infrastructure development with the region’s geography and ecological sensitivities. The stated objective is to ensure that defence modernisation and environmental preservation advance together, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient island future.
