In a remarkable demonstration of commitment and resilience, the Army Institute of Technology (AIT), Pune, has provided crucial support to former National Defence Academy (NDA) cadet Akireddy Sai Vedansh, who faced a serious neck injury that derailed his aspirations of serving in the military.
Vedansh joined the NDA in 2024 with aspirations of becoming an Indian Air Force pilot, pursuing a BTech in Applied Electronics and Communication. However, during routine training in March last year, he endured a severe cervical vertebra fracture. While the injury didn’t necessitate surgical intervention, it rendered him medically unfit for the physically demanding military training, leading to his discharge from the Academy.
In a pioneering move, AIT Pune welcomed Vedansh into the second year of its BTech program under the “over and above” seats provision. This decision was made after obtaining the necessary approvals from relevant Army authorities, in line with AICTE guidelines for genuine cases.
Having successfully completed a year at AIT, Vedansh is on the path to recovery and is unwavering in his determination to don the uniform again. He is now preparing to take the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination post-graduation, with the hope of achieving a direct entry into the Armed Forces.
Major General Uday Shankar Sengupta (Retd.), the Director of AIT Pune, emphasized the significance of this initiative, calling it a first for the institute. He expressed pride in the institution’s dedication to supporting students beyond just an academic perspective. Despite facing extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation, Vedansh has excelled in his studies and met all academic requirements during his tenure at AIT.
This initiative not only underscores the commitment of the Armed Forces to support their personnel but also serves as a testament that setbacks need not hinder a life dedicated to service.
