Britain has made the decision to cancel one of its annual military training exercises in Kenya, citing the inability to secure a required license from the Kenyan government. This announcement was made by the UK’s defense ministry on Thursday.
The British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) is stationed at a permanent base in Laikipia, located approximately 200 kilometers (130 miles) north of Nairobi. Despite Kenya gaining independence from British rule in 1963, the nations maintain a strong defense agreement that permits thousands of British troops to conduct exercises within Kenyan territory each year.
In a statement, the British Ministry of Defense expressed regret over the situation, stating, “It is with regret that the necessary licenses required to allow training to take place in Laikipia later this year have not been forthcoming.” The ministry has indicated that the training exercises would be relocated to another country, though it did not disclose the specific location.
The reasons for the unsuccessful license acquisition were not elaborated upon by the defense ministry, and there has been no response from the Kenyan government regarding the issue. Nevertheless, the ministry emphasized that this incident would not hinder the broader defense partnership between the UK and Kenya.
The military base in Laikipia has faced scrutiny in the past due to serious incidents involving British soldiers, including high-profile cases of murder and sexual assault, which have sparked controversy and raised questions about the oversight of military personnel stationed in the region.
