Meet Major Leishangthem Deepak Singh: 11 PARA Special Forces Officer Awarded Shaurya Chakra for Hostage Rescue in Arunachal

In a remarkable display of courage and tactical skill, Major Leishangthem Deepak Singh of the 11th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment Special Forces, successfully led a hostage rescue operation in Longding district, Arunachal Pradesh, on April 25, 2025. His efforts resulted in the safe recovery of two construction workers who had been abducted by insurgents from the NSCN (KYA) faction.

Honored for his bravery, Major Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. President Droupadi Murmu presented this prestigious recognition during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 Phase-I at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on June 8, 2026. This accolade not only highlights Major Singh’s heroics but also serves as a source of immense pride for his home state of Manipur, which has a rich history of contributing valiant soldiers to the Indian armed forces.

Major Singh’s military career exemplifies the best of the Parachute Regiment Special Forces—an elite formation renowned for their rigorous training and capacity to undertake high-risk operations, including counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, and hostage rescues. The challenges of these missions often require a blend of bravery, mental acuity, and physical endurance.

The abduction incident occurred in the rugged terrain of Longding, characterized by dense forests that complicate rescue efforts. Following the kidnapping, Major Singh quickly assessed the situation and devised a strategic plan to ensure the safety of the hostages while neutralizing their captors. He prioritized a cautious approach over a hasty strike, keeping in mind the threats posed to the civilian lives in danger.

During the operation, Major Singh demonstrated exemplary leadership, engaging the terrorists directly even while under heavy fire. His decision-making was guided by a single objective: the safe return of the hostages. In a close-quarter firefight, he neutralized one terrorist at point-blank range, employing his own body as a shield to protect a hostage during the chaos. His quick thinking not only safeguarded the civilians but also effectively thwarted another terrorist attempting to escape.

The operation concluded successfully with the hostages rescued and multiple insurgents neutralized, along with the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and military supplies. Major Singh’s actions during this critical mission showcased not just individual valor but also the importance of cooperation among various security forces operating in sensitive areas, highlighting a collective commitment to national security.

The citation awarding him the Shaurya Chakra praised his selflessness, stating that he put the lives of the hostages above his own. His calmness under pressure and courage in the line of duty embody the core values instilled in the Indian Armed Forces.

Major Singh’s recognition at the Defence Investiture Ceremony was a moment of triumph not just for him but for the people of Manipur, who celebrated his valor as a powerful reminder of their continued contributions to the nation’s security. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring defense personnel across India, emphasizing qualities such as courage, leadership, and responsibility—traits essential for any officer in the armed forces.

As a distinguished member of the Special Forces, Major Singh’s achievements resonate beyond military accolades. His actions in the face of danger illustrate the profound commitment to duty that characterizes India’s armed forces, making him a true representative of bravery and professionalism. The Shaurya Chakra serves as an enduring symbol of his dedication and the promise of protection he embodies for innocent lives. Major Singh stands as a beacon of inspiration for future generations, encouraging young aspirants to embody the spirit of selfless service prevalent in military leadership.
