A CRPF constable posted at the Mizoram Governor’s official residence in Aizawl was found dead on duty on Thursday morning after allegedly shooting himself with his service rifle, according to police and other official accounts. The incident has led to an unnatural death case and an ongoing investigation into the circumstances.
What happened at Lok Bhavan
The deceased has been identified as Sudhir Swami, 31, of the 2023 batch. He was on security duty at Gate No. 2, also called the North Gate, of Lok Bhavan, the official residence of the Mizoram Governor, when the incident occurred. Police said the time was around 10 a.m., though some reports placed it closer to 10:30 a.m.
According to the reports, Swami used his service-issued rifle, identified in one account as an AK-47, to shoot himself. Witnesses said they heard a single gunshot at the scene.
Police findings so far
One detailed police statement said the bullet entered through his mouth and exited through the posterior, or parietal, region of the head. An empty cartridge was recovered near the body, and the rifle’s magazine was found to still contain 30 rounds.
Police have registered an unnatural death case at Aizawl Police Station. An inquest was carried out, and a Forensic Science Laboratory team examined the spot as part of the probe. The service rifle and Swami’s mobile phone have been seized to help determine the sequence of events and any possible motive.
Identity and service details
Swami was from Harsoli in Rajasthan’s Jaipur district and was the son of Ramswaroop Swami. He was posted with F Company of the 225 Battalion and had been stationed in Mizoram for about one year.
His body was taken to Aizawl Civil Hospital, where a post-mortem examination was conducted. It is expected to be transported to his native place in Jaipur district on Friday.
What remains uncertain
Officials said the motive was not immediately known, and the investigation is continuing. Early reports had described Swami differently, with some referring to him as a Sub-Inspector, but the consistent account from PTI and major national outlets identifies him as a constable of the 2023 batch.
