PM Modi Visits UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the historic Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on 8 July 2026, highlighting the deep-rooted cultural and civilizational ties shared by India and Indonesia. The visit symbolized the enduring historical connection between the two nations, built on centuries of shared heritage, religion, and culture.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi unveiled a commemorative plaque to formally launch the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-led conservation and restoration project at the temple complex. The initiative reflects India’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage beyond its borders.

The restoration project stems from the agreement reached during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s State Visit to India in 2025, when both countries decided to collaborate on the preservation of Indonesia’s ancient Hindu temples.

Prambanan was constructed in the 9th century by the Sanjaya Dynasty and is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu TrimurtiLord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma—representing creation, preservation, and destruction in Hindu philosophy.

Recognizing its remarkable architectural brilliance and cultural significance, UNESCO inscribed the Prambanan Temple Complex as a World Heritage Site in 1991. The restoration project is expected to strengthen cultural diplomacy while ensuring the preservation of this iconic monument for future generations.

Gujarat Launches Data Centre Policy 2026–29

The Government of Gujarat unveiled its first-ever Data Centre Policy 2026–29 on 9 July 2026 in Gandhinagar, aiming to transform the state into a leading destination for digital infrastructure investments.

The policy targets investments worth ₹6 lakh crore and plans to establish 7.5 GW of data centre capacity, covering hyperscale data centres, cloud computing facilities, and AI-driven digital infrastructure.

The Department of Science and Technology has been designated as the nodal agency responsible for project approvals and policy implementation.

To encourage investment, the policy offers several incentives, including:

  • Capital subsidy
  • Interest subsidy
  • Power tariff subsidy of ₹1 per unit for 20 years
  • 100% reimbursement of SGST and electricity duty for 20 years
  • Stamp duty exemption
  • Financial assistance for desalination plants

As part of its sustainability goals, all data centre operators must source at least 51% of their electricity from renewable energy.

The Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) has been identified as the primary hub for hyperscale data centres and will receive an additional 2.5% capital subsidy on eligible investments.

The policy also includes plans to establish two new cable landing stations, which connect international submarine communication cables to India’s terrestrial digital network, significantly improving connectivity and data transmission capacity.

India Launches World’s First Once-Weekly Insulin Awiqli

India has become the seventh country to introduce Awiqli, the world’s first once-weekly basal insulin, marking a significant advancement in diabetes treatment.

Launched on 9 July 2026, Awiqli is manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and contains the active ingredient insulin icodec. In India, it has been approved for adults suffering from both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Basal insulin helps maintain stable blood glucose levels between meals and during sleep. Traditional daily insulin therapy requires approximately 365 injections annually, whereas Awiqli reduces the number to only 52 injections per year, greatly improving convenience for patients.

The medicine is delivered using the FlexTouch pen and works because insulin icodec binds with the blood protein albumin, allowing the drug to remain effective for an entire week.

A 700-unit pack of Awiqli has been priced at ₹2,611 in India, with its per-unit cost estimated to be 30–40% lower than many conventional daily insulin therapies.

Clinical studies have shown that Awiqli provides blood sugar control comparable to, and in some cases better than, daily basal insulin. However, research also indicates a relatively higher risk of hypoglycaemia among certain patients with Type 1 diabetes, making careful medical supervision essential.

The introduction of Awiqli represents an important step toward improving diabetes management, patient compliance, and overall quality of life for millions of people requiring long-term insulin therapy.
