Echodyne Opens New Radar Manufacturing Facility in Washington to Meet Growing Demand

Echodyne has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art radar manufacturing facility in Washington to address the escalating demand for counter-drone systems, air defense technologies, and airspace-monitoring sensors. This significant expansion comes as the company relocates all manufacturing operations from its headquarters to a new 86,350-square-foot facility, backed by a robust $40 million investment.

The new site is designed with approximately 74,350 square feet dedicated to manufacturing and an additional 12,000 square feet for warehousing. This facility is projected to produce over 30,000 radar units annually, positioning Echodyne to support both current and future product needs effectively.

Citing the increasing reliance on drones and other autonomous technologies in modern warfare, Echodyne CEO Eben Frankenberg emphasized the necessity for high-performance radar systems and reliable product availability. “The only way to defend against mass is with mass,” he stated, underscoring the importance of both economical and high-performance radars, alongside the capacity for large-scale manufacturing.

At the core of Echodyne’s offerings is its patented Metamaterials Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) technology, which enables electronic beam steering through an innovative, simplified design. Unlike traditional electronically scanned array radars that depend on a myriad of phase shifters, Echodyne’s MESA system is compact and software-defined, aiming to streamline production while minimizing size, weight, power usage, complexity, and costs.

Echodyne’s radar technology has seen successful integration into various platforms created by defense industry leaders such as Moog and Picogrid. Recently, in April, the company secured a contract to supply its radar technology for Trust Automation’s counter-drone platform, which is being implemented for the US Air Force.

This new manufacturing facility positions Echodyne as a key player in the growing defense sector, particularly as military operations increasingly incorporate advanced radar technologies to keep pace with evolving threats.
