The European Defence Agency (EDA) has chosen five companies to participate in field testing for its Sentinel Strike Challenge, which focuses on evaluating loitering munition systems. This operational trial will take place in Portugal later this year, as part of the initiative launched in May.
The Sentinel Strike Challenge aims to assess suicide drones weighing up to 25 kilograms (55 pounds) with a maximum operational range of 40 kilometers (25 miles). These systems are intended to address tactical gaps for member states, specifically in areas like precision strikes, navigation, and reconnaissance missions.
The selected companies include Germany’s Helsing, the Netherlands’ Destinus, Slovenia’s C-Astral, Greece’s Spirit Aeronautical Systems, and Portugal’s UAVision. Each of these finalists will be awarded a Stage 1 prize of 30,000 euros (approximately $34,523).
Additionally, in recognition of their achievements, the runners-up from the top 10 firms will each receive a Stage 1 prize of 10,000 euros (around $11,508). The runners-up include Renegade UxS and Robotto from Denmark, Cerberon Defence Systems from Germany, THALES LAS from France, and ALTUS LSA from Greece.
Evaluation of the selected unmanned aerial systems will occur during the EU OPEX26 operational experimentation campaign at the Santa Margarida military training area in Ribatejo, scheduled from late September to early October. The participating drones will compete for a significant Stage 2 prize pool of 1.8 million euros (approximately $2 million).
Warfighters from various EU countries will conduct comprehensive assessments throughout the mission cycle, which encompasses planning, launch operations, target detection, engagement, and post-strike reviews set against complex and realistic scenarios.
The EDA has clarified that the primary objective of these trials is to generate “comparable operational data” on emerging loitering munition technologies rather than distributing procurement contracts. The agency stated, “Its purpose is to generate evidence that defense ministries can use when deciding which technologies could contribute to future capabilities.”
The data collected from the Portuguese trials will play a crucial role in determining the final winners of the kamikaze drone initiative, who are anticipated to be announced next year.
