Elbit Systems Wins $350 Million Contract to Upgrade Main Battle Tanks

Elbit Systems has announced the acquisition of a substantial $350-million contract aimed at upgrading main battle tanks for an undisclosed international client. This four-year modernization initiative is designed to not only extend the operational lifespan of the client’s armored vehicles but also to enhance their combat efficacy through the integration of advanced onboard systems.

The scope of work encompasses a variety of critical upgrades, including the installation of new fire control systems and electric drive systems for both the gun and turret. Additionally, the project will enhance communications capabilities and battlefield awareness tools, promoting better coordination and targeting efficiency during operations.

A significant feature of this upgrade package is a mid-life upgrade suite that introduces advanced electro-optical sights equipped with artificial intelligence for target detection and tracking. These cutting-edge systems will facilitate operations both day and night, significantly improving engagement speed in challenging battlefield environments.

In conjunction with the enhancements to sensor and fire control systems, the contract includes provisions for secure voice communications, a supply of spare parts, and long-term maintenance support for the upgraded tanks.

Elbit Systems CEO Bezhalel Machlis emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging its diverse divisions’ strengths and expertise to provide comprehensive and integrated solutions. He highlighted the incorporation of state-of-the-art fire control, electro-optical, and communication systems alongside other modern subsystems.

The recent contract fits into a broader trend, as Elbit has been actively involved in several armored fleet modernization projects in recent years. These initiatives reflect a growing demand among armed forces to extend the operational capabilities of existing fleets while enhancing digital and sensor technologies.

In January, Elbit secured a $228-million contract from the US Army for the Iron Fist active protection system designed for Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. That same month, BAE Systems opted for Iron Fist for CV90 vehicles used by European NATO member states.

In a prior project, Elbit Systems obtained a $210-million contract in November 2025 aimed at upgrading Israel’s Merkava main battle tanks, which involved replacing outdated electronic systems and integrating new technology. This trend indicates a strong focus on modernizing military capabilities in response to evolving battlefield challenges.
