In a momentous event, the Governor of Mizoram, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, presented the esteemed Governor’s Unit Citation to the 20th Battalion, Assam Rifles, acknowledging their distinguished service and unwavering commitment to both the nation and the people of Mizoram. The honour was awarded during an Investiture Ceremony held at the Durbar Hall, Lok Bhavan, where the Governor expressed his admiration for the battalion’s exemplary operational performance while deployed in the state.
During his address, the Governor underscored the battalion’s key role in securing the Indo-Myanmar border, especially given the complex security challenges that the region faces. He commended the unit for its effective collaboration with both security and civil agencies, contributing significantly to efforts aimed at curbing narcotics smuggling, illegal cross-border activities, and other transnational threats. He particularly noted the battalion’s high standards of operational readiness.
Additionally, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh recognized the battalion’s initiatives to strengthen ties with local communities through various Civic Action Programmes, dubbing the Assam Rifles as the “Sentinels of the North East” and “Friends of the Hills.” He pointed out that the unit’s outreach not only enhanced civil-military relations but also mirrored the force’s core ethos of Seva, Suraksha and Bandhutva (Service, Security, and Fraternity).
Expressing confidence in the battalion’s legacy of dedicated service, the Governor urged all ranks to uphold the proud traditions and reputation of the Assam Rifles in safeguarding the nation’s frontiers while continuing to serve the local communities.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of notable figures including Brigadier Puspendar Sorayan, Deputy Inspector General of 23 Sector Assam Rifles; Shri Krashnendra Singh, Chief Engineer of Pushpak; Colonel Jaswinder Singh, SM, Commandant of the 20th Battalion Assam Rifles; along with various senior officers and personnel from the force.
The 20th Battalion Assam Rifles, assigned to the 23 Sector Headquarters in Aizawl, was stationed at Lunglawn, Lunglei, from November 12, 2023, to March 19, 2026. During this period, they made substantial contributions to border security, counter-smuggling operations, and community outreach initiatives in the region.
The Governor’s Unit Citation stands as a significant acknowledgment of the battalion’s operational excellence, professionalism, and dedicated service, reinforcing their crucial role in enhancing security and fostering peace and development in Mizoram.
