Vice Admiral Swaminathan hails from humble beginnings in Bangalore, Karnataka, where he was born to educators D. Swaminathan and Shanta Swaminathan. His formative years were spent in NR Colony, Basavanagudi, where his early education at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School and Sainik School, Bijapur, nurtured his passion for learning and discipline. His journey in the Indian Navy began when he graduated from the National Defence Academy and was commissioned on July 1, 1987. His relentless quest for knowledge complements his military duties; he possesses multiple degrees, including a BSc from Jawaharlal Nehru University, an MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, an MA in Defence Studies from King’s College London, and a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University.
