India Successfully Test-Fires Medium-Range Ballistic Missile Agni-4 from Odisha

New Delhi / Chandipur: India on Thursday successfully test-fired the Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) Agni-4 from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, the Ministry of Defence said.

The launch, conducted on August 6, 2026, under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Defence said: “Medium Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-4’ was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha on August 6. The launch validated all operational and technical parameters. The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command.”

The same confirmation was issued by the Press Information Bureau and the Ministry’s official handle, underscoring that the trial was a routine user validation exercise by the SFC, the tri-service formation responsible for the operational control of India’s strategic nuclear arsenal.

Missile Capabilities and Technical Profile

Agni-4 (also referred to as Agni-IV) is a two-stage, solid-fuelled surface-to-surface ballistic missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It forms a key part of India’s strategic missile series and is designed for road-mobile launch from transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) platforms.

Agni-4 bridges the capability gap between the shorter-range Agni-II and the longer-range Agni-III and Agni-V systems. The missile is operated by the Strategic Forces Command and contributes to India’s credible minimum deterrence posture under the Nuclear Command Authority.

Thursday’s trial continues a series of regular user trials aimed at confirming the reliability and readiness of systems already inducted into service. Sources note that India has also conducted successful trials of the Agni-Prime and Agni-3 missiles earlier in 2026, reflecting ongoing emphasis on maintaining operational preparedness across the Agni series.

Development and Testing History

Originally developed as an upgraded version of the Agni-II Prime, Agni-4 first flew successfully in November 2011 from Wheeler Island (now Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island) off the Odisha coast. Subsequent tests in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024 progressively validated full-range performance, road-mobile launch configuration, guidance accuracy, and re-entry characteristics. The system was inducted into the Strategic Forces Command following user trials.

The latest successful firing from Chandipur reaffirms the maturity of the platform and the effectiveness of India’s indigenous solid-propellant, guidance, and materials technologies developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme lineage.
