Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, the Director General of the Assam Rifles, recently visited the Zokhawsang Battalion in Mizoram to assess the unit’s operational preparedness and overall functioning. During his visit, which took place on May 24, 2026, Lt Gen Lakhera conveyed his commendations to the battalion for their exemplary efforts in establishing the Zokhawsang garrison. He praised the troops for their professionalism, commitment, and operational efficiency, underscoring the importance of these traits in their mission.
Highlighting the welfare of the troops, Lt Gen Lakhera inaugurated the Vijender Singh Institute, a newly developed recreational facility aimed at enhancing the well-being of the personnel. He encouraged the soldiers to make full use of this infrastructure, emphasizing the significance of recreation for bonding and fostering camaraderie within the unit.
In addition to troop welfare, the Director General recognized the battalion’s successful anti-narcotics operations and the recovery of war-like stores in the region. He noted the critical role the Assam Rifles plays in maintaining security and stability in Mizoram, particularly in combating illegal activities that threaten the community.
During his visit, Lt Gen Lakhera also took time to interact with students and faculty at the Bevela Lushai Centre. He described the institution as a beacon of hope for the youth of Mizoram and expressed his admiration for the courage and contributions of the Mizo people toward nation-building.
The importance of the visit lay not only in assessing operational readiness but also in reinforcing the commitment of the Assam Rifles to troop welfare, community engagement, and coordinated efforts against illegal activities in Northeast India.
