Major Mustafa Bohara

Major Mustafa Bohara of the Indian Army Aviation Corps is being remembered as a paragon of courage and selflessness following his tragic demise during a crucial mission. He was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously for his gallantry on 21 October 2022, when, at just 27 years old, he made the ultimate sacrifice while conducting an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission in Arunachal Pradesh. His heroic final act involved steering a burning helicopter away from populated areas, thereby saving numerous civilian lives.

Born on 14 May 1995 in Kheroda village in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district, Major Bohara was raised in a family that emphasized integrity and duty. His father, Shri Zakiuddin Bohara, found employment in Kuwait, while his mother, Smt. Fatima Bohara, played an instrumental role in instilling discipline and ambition in him. From a young age, he aspired to serve his nation in uniform.

His academic journey began at Uday Shiksha Mandir in Kheroda and continued at St. Paul’s School in Udaipur. His aspirations led him to the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, where he was selected for the 128th Course. Upon completing his training, he joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, earning his commission in the Mahar Regiment as a Lieutenant.

With a fervent passion for aviation, Major Bohara volunteered for the Army Aviation Corps. He underwent extensive training, which included advanced flying instruction at the Combat Army Aviation School in Nashik. He qualified as a skilled pilot on the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH-WSI) Rudra, a key component of the Army’s combat fleet. By 2022, he had ascended to the rank of Major and was assigned to the 252 Army Aviation Squadron, where he operated under challenging high-altitude conditions in the North-East.

On the morning of 21 October 2022, Major Bohara participated in a five-member crew on an ISR mission near the Indo-China border. While flying as co-pilot alongside Major Vikas Bhambhu, the mission proceeded smoothly until a catastrophic fire broke out mid-air near Migging in Upper Siang district around 10:28 AM. As the aircraft rapidly lost altitude and control, the pilots faced a dire choice.

They could attempt an emergency landing in a nearby open area, but this would have put civilians at serious risk and could have resulted in an explosion near an ammunition storage point. In those critical moments, Major Bohara and Major Bhambhu prioritized the safety of those on the ground over their own survival.

Displaying remarkable composure and skill even amid extreme stress, the pilots maneuvered the flaming helicopter away from populated zones, ultimately directing it toward an uninhabited mountainous area. The helicopter crash-landed around 10:43 AM, resulting in the loss of all five crew members. However, their selfless actions prevented a far greater tragedy.

In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, Major Bohara was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu on 15 August 2023. The award was formally presented to his parents during a Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 5 July 2024, with the citation emphasizing the pilots’ exceptional courage and commitment to saving lives even in the face of death.

The timing of the incident carries an additional layer of heartbreak, as Major Bohara was engaged and preparing for his wedding when he lost his life. Yet, in the midst of their grief, his mother’s reflection encapsulated the soldier’s legacy: soldiers never truly die; they live on in the hearts of the nation they serve.

Major Mustafa Bohara’s journey, from a small village in Rajasthan to the skies over Arunachal Pradesh, embodies dedication, sacrifice, and courage. His actions serve as a poignant reminder of the silent heroism that characterizes India’s armed forces, exemplifying the ethos of “Service Before Self” and ensuring that he will be remembered as one of the nation’s bravest souls.
