Major Salman Ahmad Khan is celebrated as a paragon of courage, leadership, and selfless sacrifice within the Indian Army. Hailing from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, he laid down his life during a rigorous counter-insurgency operation in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, at the young age of 26. Despite sustaining severe injuries from enemy fire, Major Khan demonstrated remarkable resolve by refusing to retreat, continuing to lead his team until the terrorist threat was definitively neutralised.
In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and commitment to duty, Major Khan was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s most prestigious peacetime gallantry awards. His story serves as an enduring source of inspiration for countless Indians, particularly young defense aspirants motivated to serve the nation.
Born on October 22, 1978, to Shri Mushtaq Ahmed Khan and Smt. Rashida, Salman displayed discipline, confidence, and patriotism from a young age. His upbringing instilled in him the values of duty, humility, and courage—qualities that would define his military career.
Major Khan received his foundational education at Sainik School, Lucknow, an institution dedicated to cultivating aspiring candidates for the armed forces. This experience solidified his ambition to join the Army and equipped him for the demanding journey ahead. His hard work and determination allowed him to enter the National Defence Academy and subsequently train at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.
Upon his commissioning into the 4 Sikh Battalion of the Sikh Regiment in June 1999 at the young age of 20, Major Khan quickly earned the respect of his superiors and peers through his professionalism, responsibility, and dedication. By 2005, he had garnered the rank of Major, and among his fellow soldiers, he was affectionately referred to as “Sallu,” which emphasized the camaraderie he shared.
Known for both his bravery and his humility, Major Khan was adept at building strong relationships with his troop. His energetic personality and interest in sports made him a beloved figure within his unit. Following his distinguished service, he was posted to the 6 Rashtriya Rifles, a specialized counter-insurgency unit stationed in Jammu and Kashmir to address ongoing terrorist threats.
In this challenging context, Major Khan balanced firm operational tactics with compassion. He built rapport with the local population in Kakroosa village, where his genuine concern for their safety made him a symbol of security and hope.
The pivotal moment of his career unfolded in May 2005 during a two-day counter-insurgency operation in Kupwara. On May 5, credible intelligence indicated the presence of armed terrorists near Trehgam, prompting Major Khan to lead his team in establishing an ambush at Bangargund. The operation was executed with precision, resulting in the elimination of one terrorist and the acquisition of critical intelligence.
On May 6, fresh intelligence reported that a surviving terrorist was hiding in Pazipora village. Major Khan spearheaded a cordon-and-search operation, but the team quickly came under heavy fire. Despite sustaining serious injuries to his leg and abdomen, he chose to remain at the forefront, refusing evacuation. Instead, he engaged the terrorists directly, ultimately neutralising the last threat, thereby safeguarding his men.
It was only after the mission’s successful completion that Major Khan collapsed due to his injuries. Although evacuated to a military hospital, he succumbed to his wounds on May 7, 2005, at the age of 26. His actions during these two days exemplified heroic leadership and a profound commitment to his duty and comrades.
In recognition of his acts of bravery, Major Khan was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously. His name is inscribed on the National War Memorial in New Delhi, serving as a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers like him.
