Ramon Magsaysay Awards 2026
- The Ramon Magsaysay Award 2026 has honored three people who have been making a significant contribution to Asia through their work.
- Tommy Koh of Singapore who is a diplomat and a lawyer, Bo Kyi from Myanmar who is a human rights activist, and Runa Khan from Bangladesh who is a social worker and a former teacher are the awardees for the year 2026, as announced on August 31.
- Koh is a key figure who took part in negotiations that resulted in the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which created the legal framework for the peaceful and just utilization of the oceans of the planet.
- Bangladesh’s development leader Runa Khan, aged 67, felt deeply touched when she came to know about the plight of those living in remote char communities in her country. She set up an organization called ‘Friendship’ to provide basic services to populations out of the reach of traditional development organizations.
- Myanmar human right activist Bo Kyi, 61, knows firsthand what repression looks like as he was himself arrested following Myanmar’s pro-democracy demonstration in 1988 and was twice jailed for seven years.
- The main purpose of creating the award was to encourage people showing “greatness of spirit” who serve the peoples of Asia, irrespective of race, gender or religion. The prize is awarded every year since 1958 after the death of former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay in 1957.
Lionel Messi Retires from International Football
- Lionel Messi, the Argentina captain and one of football’s most capped players, announced his retirement from international football on 31 August 2026. He ended his senior international career with 125 goals in 207 appearances for Argentina.
- Lionel Messi made his senior international debut for Argentina in August 2005. He played his final international match on 19 July 2026 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time.
- Messi retired as Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer and most-capped player. His international honours include the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, two Copa América titles, and an Olympic gold medal in 2008.
- Messi said that he had drafted his farewell statement on 21 July 2026, two days after the World Cup final. He also referred to the death of his father and agent, Jorge Messi, on 8 August 2026 in Rosario.
26th SCO Summit Held in Bishkek
- The 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit was held at the Yrys Ordo Congress Hall in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on August 31 and September 1, 2026. The summit marked the 25th anniversary of the SCO, which was founded in 2001, and it brought together leaders of the 10 member states, observer representatives, and dialogue partner representatives.
- The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a Eurasian intergovernmental grouping that began in 2001 as the Shanghai Five process. Its current members are India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus.
- Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov chaired the Council of Heads of State meeting and handed over the rotating chairmanship to Pakistan. The member states signed the Bishkek Declaration and adopted more than 20 strategic decisions and statements during the summit.
- India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the SECURE vision, which stands for Security and Growth for All in the Region, and called for coordinated action against terrorism.
- The SCO leaders approved institutional arrangements for the Universal Centre for Countering Security Challenges and Threats to SCO Member States and the Executive Committee of the SCO Anti-Narcotics Centre.
Turkey Joins Artemis Accords as 71st Member
- The Republic of Türkiye became the 71st country to sign the Artemis Accords on 31 August 2026. The signing took place at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and placed Türkiye in a U.S.-led framework for peaceful and cooperative space exploration.
- The Artemis Accords were launched in 2020 as a set of non-binding principles for civil space activities. The framework covers transparency, interoperability, emergency assistance to astronauts, registration of space objects, and the protection of historic sites in outer space, including lunar heritage locations.
- NASA referred to Türkiye’s recent human spaceflight milestones, including astronaut Alper Gezeravcı’s Axiom Mission 3 flight to the International Space Station in 2024 and researcher Tuva Atasever’s suborbital flight with Virgin Galactic in 2024.
- Türkiye is also preparing AYAP-1, its first lunar mission, which aims to send a hybrid-propelled spacecraft to the Moon in early 2027.
Gollala Gudi Temple Added to India’s National Monuments List
- Gollalagudi Temple, also called Gollala Gudi, in Palampet village of Mulugu district, Telangana, was declared a monument of national importance through a gazette notification issued by the Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism on 1 September 2026.
- The declaration increased the number of Archaeological Survey of India protected monuments in Telangana to 10.
- A monument of national importance in India is protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. The Archaeological Survey of India takes charge of such sites for conservation, maintenance, and regulated public access.
- Gollalagudi is identified as a Trikutalaya temple, a form with three sanctums. It has an east-facing mandapa connected to three garbhagrihas, which is a feature associated with regional Kakatiya-era temple architecture in Telangana.
- The temple is broadly attributed to the Kakatiya period of the 12th to 13th centuries CE. Its exact construction date and original dedication remain subjects for archaeological and epigraphic study.
- The Archaeological Survey of India, Hyderabad Circle, stated that it will take charge of the site for conservation work and minor repairs. The planned work includes addressing waterlogging and constructing a proper pathway for visitors.
Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards 2024
- The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has declared the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards (TNNAA) 2024 awarding four persons with outstanding contribution and achievements in adventure activities.
- Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award is a national recognition given in appreciation for excellence in adventure sports. It is named after Tenzing Norgay who was one of the pioneer mountaineers in the conquest of Mount Everest.
- ₹15 lakh along with a statuette and certificate will be awarded to each of the TNNAA 2024 awardees. These awards will be presented by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This will be done during the National Sports Awards 2025 ceremony.

India to Host Inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy 2027
- The upcoming ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 will take place in India following the transfer of the maiden championship from Sri Lanka by the ICC. The championship will take place between February 14 and February 28, 2027, with six sides vying for the championship trophy.
- The move comes following the apprehensions about government meddling in the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket, which is currently running its affairs with an interim committee as it implements the reform measures.

- The format of the competition among the six teams will involve playing through a round robin league format where all the sides get to play each other.

India to Host World Archery Para Series 2026
- India will host the Hyundai World Archery Para Series 2026 for the first time at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, from September 5 to September 9, 2026.
- The tournament is Stage 3 of the 2026 World Archery Para Series and will feature competition in Recurve Open, Compound Open, W1, and Visually Impaired divisions.
- The World Archery Para Series is an international para archery circuit conducted under World Archery, the global governing body for archery. The 2026 series includes Stage 1 in Bangkok, Thailand, Stage 2 in Nove Mesto, Czechia, and Stage 3 in Ahmedabad, India.
- The Ahmedabad leg is being organised through the Archery Association of India, the Government of Gujarat, the Sports Authority of Gujarat, and the Sports Authority of India. The formal inauguration is scheduled for September 4, 2026, at The Forum – Hotel & Convention in Ahmedabad.
- A 29-member Indian squad trained at the SAI National Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar from August 23 to September 2, 2026. The squad includes Paris 2024 Paralympic medallists Harvinder Singh, Sheetal Devi, and Rakesh Kumar, and 11 of the 29 archers have also been selected for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
- World Archery reported 109 athletes from 19 nations for the Ahmedabad stage, while a Gujarat CMO release cited more than 100 athletes from 20 countries. The event adds India to the list of host nations for the 2026 World Archery Para Series alongside Thailand and Czechia.
India Wins Nine Medals at International Earth Science Olympiad 2026
- India won nine medals at the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) 2026, held in Turin, Italy, from August 20 to 27, 2026. The four-member Indian student team won four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, which marked the country’s best-ever performance in the competition.
- The International Earth Science Olympiad is an annual international competition for secondary school students in Earth science subjects. It includes written examinations, practical assessments, field investigations, and project-based tasks in geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy.
- The Indian contingent comprised Soumik Mandal, Aaron Maiti, Riddhi Ranjan, and Mohammed Ehtesham Rizvi. The students were selected from about 17,000 national applicants and trained through camps at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and Anna University, Chennai.
- Soumik Mandal won gold in the individual written and practical examinations and recorded the third-highest individual score in the 19-year history of the IESO. Ranjan and Mandal won gold in the International Team Field Investigation, while Maiti won gold in the Earth Science Project.
- IESO events usually test both individual and team performance through theory, practical work, and field-based problem solving. The competition is linked to Earth system studies, which include the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.
Satwik-Chirag Win China Masters 2026
- Indian badminton players Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have displayed exceptional comeback to claim the China Masters Super 750 crown on Sunday in Shenzhen.
- World No. 5 Indian men’s doubles duo managed to beat Chinese duo He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu by 11-21, 21-13, 21-17 in a thrilling one hour and ten minutes final match.
- Winning the China Masters is the second major title for the Indian duo this year, besides having reached the finals of the Singapore Open Super 750 and the Thailand Open Super 500.
- The most important aspect of this win is that the duo of Satwik and Chirag had made it to the final of the China Masters two years back, in 2023 and 2025, only to come runners-up on both occasions.
Rangpur-Sivasagar Historical Ensemble That Added to UNESCO Tentative List
- The Rangpur-Sivasagar Historical Complex in Assam has been added to the World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO, and this site is representative of the architectural, cultural, and technological achievements of the Ahom dynasty.
- This cultural heritage property has officially been proposed by the India to the UNESCO in month of June 2026 and is situated within Sivasagar district, where Ahoms ruled for almost six centuries in the Upper Brahmaputra Valley.
- The significance of the heritage site does not lie in the existence of one particular monument, but in its being a full historical complex, which includes palaces, temples, huge tanks of water, roads, bridges, fortifications, and ceremonial buildings. The site has been evaluated by UNESCO according to Criteria (iii) and (iv).
- The historic ensemble lies approximately 360 km northeast of Guwahati and includes, primarily, two historically connected sites, namely Rangpur and Sivasagar.
- Rangpur, which was referred to as Che Muan or “the city of amusement,” was set up as a pre-planned capital by Ahom king Swargadeo Rudra Singha in 1704. This site was surrounded by wetlands, river and elevated land, and its architecture had been harmoniously incorporated in the surrounding nature.
- The dynasty of Ahoms was founded in Assam in the 13th century and ruled there for about 600 years, making it one of the longest lasting regional kingdoms of India. Its political influence came to an end after signing of the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826.
- Being a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List does not imply that the site is already recognized as a World Heritage Site. The Tentative List is one of the crucial preparatory steps for nominating a property to the World Heritage Site.
- There are currently 73 properties of India in the UNESCO Tentative List. The Rangpur- Sivasagar Historic Ensemble was nominated on 19 June 2026 in the cultural category.
Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian Grand Prix at Monza
- Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza on 6 September 2026 for Mercedes. He became the first Italian to win his home Grand Prix in 60 years, after Ludovico Scarfiotti won the race in 1966. Antonelli was 20 years old at the time of the victory.
- The Italian Grand Prix is a Formula 1 World Championship race held at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Lombardy, Italy. Monza is one of the oldest and fastest circuits in Formula 1 and has hosted the Italian Grand Prix for decades.
- The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is known as the “Temple of Speed” because of its long straights and high average speeds. The Parabolica corner, now renamed Curva Alboreto, is one of the best-known turns at the circuit.
- Antonelli started from 19th on the grid after a penalty for power-unit changes. He finished 3.857 seconds ahead of George Russell, who took second place, while Max Verstappen finished third.
- Antonelli’s victory took his drivers’ championship total to 267 points. He led George Russell by 66 points after the Monza race.
- Lando Norris finished fourth and Oscar Piastri finished fifth. Antonelli also recovered after a brief off into the gravel at Variante del Rettifilo on lap 49 before making the decisive pass with three laps remaining.
Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2026
- Lucknow tops among the million-plus cities in the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2026 with respect to steps taken to curb air pollution. Indore and Jabalpur have been awarded the second and third positions, respectively.
- The annual survey rates cities and towns for the measures taken to mitigate major sources of air pollution, namely road dust, construction debris, vehicular and industrial pollution.
- The findings also bring out a crucial point. A city may rank high on the criteria of measures taken to control air pollution, without having achieved the stipulated ambient air quality standards.
- Measures taken by Lucknow includes,
- Enhancing the usage of electric vehicles in waste collection.
- Use of mechanized road sweepers to curb dust.
- Managing legacy-waste.
- Steps to reduce major sources of particulate pollution.

President’s Colour Presented to Goa Police
- The President’s Colour was presented to the Goa Police on 7 September 2026 at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Taleigao, Goa. Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the honour, and Goa became the fifth state police force in India to receive the President’s Police Colour.
- The President’s Colour is a ceremonial military or police honour awarded by the President of India to units with distinguished service. In India, the award is associated with exceptional discipline, operational record, and service to the nation.
- During the event, Amit Shah launched an AI-based multilingual voice assistant for the national cyber-crime helpline 1930. The system supports 12 languages and is intended for use by residents and tourists in cyber-crime reporting.
- The Goa Police also recorded a reduction in emergency response time through the 112 helpline from 18 minutes to 8 minutes. The Home Minister also set a target for Goa to eliminate the drug menace by 2029.

- Shekhawati havelis of Rajasthan have made a great leap forward towards potential heritage recognition at the international level through being listed on the UNESCO Tentative List.
- Characterized by colorful façade, ornate frescoes, extensive courtyards, and grand architecture, these historic mansions offer visual documentation of the lifestyle of northeastern Rajasthan.
- Tentative listing of the Shekhawati havelis does not mean that they are already on the World Heritage List. Tentative listing is just one of the important preliminary stages before a country can propose a heritage site as the World Heritage Site to UNESCO.
Sheetal Devi Wins First Individual Gold in Ahmedabad Para Series
- Sheetal Devi of India created her mark in India in her impressive performance at the Hyundai World Archery Para Series, winning her maiden individual gold medal in the compound women’s final in Ahmedabad.
- Defeating Kazakhstan’s Aizada Seidan in the shoot-off match, Sheetal Devi won the competition. Her victory will further build up the experience in her growing career. Sheetal Devi’s triumph was made just before the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games.
- The Indian para archer was challenged by the formidable opponent from Kazakhstan, Aizada Seidan. Both athletes started the competition with an identical score of 30 points each. But the athlete from Kazakhstan scored two Xs with her final two arrows and forced the competition into the shoot-off match.
- The Ahmedabad final also witnessed a career feat for Seidan.
- Seidan, who was ranked 44th in the world in archery, was looking forward to her first-ever title but ended up taking the second prize.
- She nonetheless bagged her first ever silver in the event during the course of her career.
Nirbhay Choudhary Breaks Men’s Hammer Throw National Record
- Indian athlete Nirbhay Choudhary created a new national record in the men’s hammer throw on 10 September 2026 at the Indian Athletics Final Series in New Delhi.
- Choudhary produced a throw of 71.02 metres, surpassing the previous Indian record of 70.73 metres, which had been set by Neeraj Kumar in 2016.
- About Hammer Throw
- Hammer throw is a field event in athletics. The athlete swings and rotates a heavy metal ball attached to a wire and handle before releasing it into the field. The distance is measured from the throwing circle to the nearest point where the implement lands.
- National records represent the best performances officially recognised within a country under the applicable athletics rules. In India, such records are maintained by the Athletics Federation of India.
- The Indian Athletics Final Series in New Delhi served as an important competitive event for Indian athletes preparing for major international competitions, including the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Tanya Chaudhary Sets National Hammer Throw Record
- Tanya Chaudhary, a 22-year-old athlete from Uttar Pradesh, set a new national record in the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 68.35 metres at the Indian Athletics Series Final in New Delhi on 10 September 2026.
- She won the gold medal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and finished ahead of Anushka Yadav, who recorded 66.34 metres.
- The women’s hammer throw is a track and field throwing event in which athletes rotate and release a metal ball attached to a wire and grip. The standard implement used in senior women’s competition weighs 4 kilograms, and the event is governed internationally by World Athletics.

- The UNESCO has named six recipients of the International Literacy Prizes 2026, for their outstanding contributions to literacy through innovative projects from Colombia, Lebanon, Mexico, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Nigeria and Thailand.
- The prize was awarded during the International Literacy Day 2026, celebrated worldwide on September 8–9 in Chiapas, Mexico.
- The theme for this year’s award ceremony is “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,” which emphasizes the requirement to ensure that literacy systems become more inclusive and multilingual.”

Ancient Tamil Classic Gifted by PM Modi to Vladimir Putin
- PM Narendra Modi presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural while hosting him in New Delhi prior to the BRICS Summit. This has led to increased interest in one of the most important books in Tamil literature, traditionally credited to poet philosopher Thiruvalluvar.
- Written in Old Tamil, the Thirukkural consists of 1,330 kurals spread out in 133 chapters, which teach ideas related to ethics, behavior, administration, justice, money, friendships, family life, and love; hence it is not limited to any religion or philosophy.
- The Thirukkural, also known as the Kural, is an ancient Tamil text traditionally written by Thiruvalluvar. The book consists of 1,330 couplets that contain one idea or lesson.
- This text is made up of 133 chapters, each consisting of 10 couplets. Instead of focusing on one area, it addresses a wide variety of aspects of human life.
- The 133 chapters of the Thirukkural are divided into three major sections:
India-Russia Trade Target Set at $100 Billion by 2030
- India and Russia have set a bilateral trade target of 100 billion by 2030, with current trade at around 60 billion. The two countries are also pursuing a new Bilateral Investment Treaty and a bilateral investment target of $50 billion by 2030.
- India and Russia discussed expanded industrial cooperation in New Delhi in September 2026 ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.
- The agenda covered railways, the steel value chain, civil nuclear energy, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, information technology, artificial intelligence, services, engineering, and auto components.
- INNOPROM India 2026 was held in New Delhi around 10–11 September 2026. The exhibition brought together India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Russia’s Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov for discussions on industrial and trade cooperation.
- India and Russia also discussed defence cooperation, including S-400 deliveries, BrahMos upgrades, and talks on joint production of Su-57 fighter jets. Energy cooperation covered oil and gas supplies, fertiliser procurement, and a possible second site for Russian-constructed nuclear power plants in India.
Global Chess League 2026
- The fourth edition of the Global Chess League (GCL) 2026 concluded with the Ganges Grandmasters emerging as champions for the first time in the history of the competition.
- The tournament was conducted from 5 to 13 September 2026, bringing together leading chess players from around the world. The final was held at The Lalit Ashok in Bengaluru.
- In the championship final, Ganges Grandmasters defeated Alpine APL Pipers by an aggregate score of 7–5 over two legs. The second leg proved decisive for Ganges Grandmasters, with Ian Nepomniachtchi defeating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, while Stavroula Tsolakidou defeated Koneru Humpy. These victories helped Ganges secure the overall championship.
- The tournament featured intense competition among leading teams. Ganges Grandmasters finished first, followed by Alpine APL Pipers. FYERS American Gambits secured third position, while CheQ Mumba Masters finished fourth.
- The prize structure listed in the presentation awarded $250,000 to the champions, $125,000 to the runners-up, $75,000 to the third-placed team and $50,000 to the fourth-placed team. The presentation also mentions total prize money of approximately $1 million.
China to Host the 19th BRICS Summit in 2027

India’s 51st Doppler Weather Radar Inaugurated in Sambalpur
- India’s 51st Doppler Weather Radar was inaugurated at Sambalpur in Odisha on 16 September 2026. The radar is located at Jamadarpali in Sambalpur and functions as a Make in India installation under Mission Mausam.
- A Doppler Weather Radar is a meteorological instrument that uses the Doppler effect to measure the movement of precipitation particles and wind within clouds. It is used for short-range weather monitoring, storm tracking, and rainfall estimation.
- The Sambalpur radar provides meteorological data within a 250 km radius and has a 150-metre resolution. The system updates observations every 10 minutes and is the third Doppler radar in Odisha after Paradip and Gopalpur.

QDENGA : India’s First Approved Dengue Vaccine
- India set to get its first approved dengue vaccine with QDENGA to be marketed in the private sector in the first six months of 2027.
- The vaccine, which has been developed by the Japanese drug manufacturing company, Takeda, has received marketing authorisation from the Indian Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in July 2026 for use among people aged between 4 and 60 years.
- QDENGA, also referred to as TAK-003, is a live attenuated tetravalent dengue vaccine.

- In 2024, WHO provided prequalification to QDENGA. It is given in two doses, three months apart.

- But just because of such a license, this doesn’t mean all individuals aged between 4 and 60 would be able to get the vaccine. QDENGA will first become available in the private sector, and its price has not yet been disclosed.

- Gwalior is set to emerge as an important telecom manufacturing centre with the proposed development of the country’s first Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ).
- The project is expected to involve an estimated investment of ₹5,500 crore and is projected to generate more than 18,000 direct employment opportunities.

- Indian Esha Singh bagged the silver medal in the women’s 25m pistol individual event of the Asian Games 2026 held in Nagoya, Japan on September 28. Esha qualified for the final with a total of 580 points and then had to go through several shoot-offs for a medal in the event.
- In the gold medal shoot-off, she competed against Chinese Xiao Jiaruixuan. While both shooters were tied at 38 points at the end of the regular final round, Esha failed the last shot and ended up taking the second position while Kim Hyon Suk from North Korea won bronze.

India’s First LNG-Powered Train Flagged Off
- India’s first LNG-powered train flagged off from Sabarmati Railway Station in the Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on September 27th 2026, by Respecatble Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.
- This venture seeks to utilize LNG as an alternative fuel source in the operations of railways through the adoption of a dual-fuel LNG-diesel model. As per the government, the idea behind this project is to reduce diesel consumption, save on fuel costs, and facilitate cleaner railway operations.
- This train is not fueled by LNG alone. The Driving Power Cars (DPCs) in this train have been modified to run on both LNG and diesel.

The modified system still maintains the capacity of the conventional diesel engine.
- This particular conversion project is about two Driving Power Cars, each one having 1,400 HP power, which have been converted for LNG-diesel dual fuel operations.
