During this drill, test emergency messages are being dispatched to mobile phones throughout the country, aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and communication efficiency.
As part of this testing initiative, users may notice several distinct features associated with the alerts they receive. These alerts are expected to come with loud sound notifications, including beeping or vibrating alerts, designed to draw attention swiftly. Additionally, messages will be available in multiple languages, encompassing English, Hindi, and various regional dialects. Recipients might encounter these alerts multiple times, given the nature of the drill.
Officials have emphasized that these notifications are strictly test messages. Citizens are reassured that no action is required from them during this exercise, and they can remain calm as they receive these alerts.
The SACHET platform, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics, is the backbone of this alert system. SACHET is engineered to facilitate geo-targeted emergency communication, allowing rapid delivery of alerts across different mobile networks. This capability ensures that messaging remains reliable, even in scenarios of network congestion, which can occur during major emergencies.
The overarching objective of the Cell Broadcast system is to provide real-time warnings during disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, and extreme weather conditions. Its design ensures that alerts can reach a wide audience instantly across all mobile devices, significantly enhancing the country’s emergency response capabilities.
Currently, the system is undergoing extensive testing across all States and Union Territories in India. Authorities are meticulously evaluating its performance, reliability, and coverage, preparing for a full-scale rollout upon successful completion of the trials.
