The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has entered into framework agreements with five leading suppliers specializing in deployable counter-drone systems. This strategic move is set to expedite the procurement process for NATO allies and partner nations by allowing them to access pre-approved contracts more efficiently.
The selected suppliers—Axon, BSS, Defsecintel, JISR, and CS Group France—bring a robust suite of solutions featuring a common command-and-control (C2) architecture. This unified architecture is designed to integrate modular sensors, electronic warfare effectors, and optional hard-kill interceptors, providing a comprehensive approach to drone threat management.
The implementation of this unified C2 layer will empower operators to effectively detect, identify, and respond to drone threats across various environments, including fixed sites, forward operating bases, and mobile deployments. This multi-supplier approach not only aims to hasten the procurement process but also enhances supply resilience and promotes shared through-life support among the contractors involved.
In light of evolving threats, the NSPA plans to continually expand its catalogue of solutions, ensuring that NATO forces have access to advanced and proven technologies through a streamlined procurement pathway that aligns with emerging operational requirements.
This development coincides with NATO’s broader initiative to bolster its counter-drone capabilities. In July, the alliance announced the establishment of a counter-drone marketplace aimed at providing NATO-tested and compatible systems. This initiative is part of a significant commitment to invest over $40 billion in enhancing counter-drone capabilities over the next five years.
Alongside procurement enhancements, NATO is expanding its training programs for drone operators. The initiative includes the extension of the NATO Multinational Flight Training Europe program to encompass drone training, allowing participating nations to utilize shared training infrastructure and expertise. This comprehensive strategy underscores NATO’s dedication to advancing its operational readiness in the face of increasing drone-related challenges.
