The North Carolina Air National Guard is actively seeking to enhance its operational capabilities by procuring powered paragliding systems. This initiative aims to improve the survivability and effectiveness of Air Force Special Warfare personnel during critical combat and disaster response operations.
Powered paragliders present a significant advantage, enabling teams to deploy quietly into remote or hard-to-reach areas. This capability allows for the delivery of essential payloads, establishment of communication lines, and the execution of independent aerial assessments. Moreover, these systems facilitate life-saving operations without the need for conventional air or ground transport, which can often be constrained in emergencies.
This acquisition is particularly relevant during state missions when traditional road access may be hindered. The Air National Guard, serving as the US Air Force’s reserve component, has a dual mission that encompasses both homeland security in state emergencies and global combat operations when federal service is activated.
In terms of operational requirements, the powered paraglider must have the capacity to support the pilot along with at least 80 pounds (36 kilograms) of necessary mission equipment. It is mandated to utilize a minimum 185cc engine, specifically optimized for high-altitude operations. Additionally, an extended-range fuel tank is necessary to facilitate flights of up to 100 miles (161 kilometers).
Safety and functionality are also key features of the system. The powered paraglider must include an adjustable harness with integrated spine protection, comprehensive flight instrumentation, a steerable reserve parachute, and an automatic flotation device to ensure safety during potential water landings.
The procurement process will also involve comprehensive training and sustainment packages. Prospective users will undergo a 21-day basic flight operations course designed for two individuals. This course will cover essential topics such as powered paragliding fundamentals, heavy-payload operations, cross-country navigation, and techniques for short takeoff and landing.
Furthermore, a 10-day maintenance course for two personnel will be included, certifying them to handle organizational-level maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs for both the paraglider and its engine. The sustainment package will ensure operational readiness, supporting at least 150 flight hours or one year of continuous operation.
