The Russian defense ministry confirmed that air defenses successfully intercepted 556 drones across more than a dozen regions, with the most intense activity in the capital.
In the aftermath of the attacks, Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that a woman died when a drone struck a private residence, while one individual remains trapped under debris. Additionally, two men also lost their lives in the strikes, which commenced around 3 a.m. local time. The governor noted that the drone assault resulted in injuries to four other individuals and targeted various infrastructure facilities in the area.
The incident follows a vow from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday to escalate retaliatory actions against Russia, a move prompted by a recent Russian attack on Kyiv that killed 24 civilians. Within Moscow, local administration stated that its air defense systems managed to intercept at least 74 drones throughout the night, contributing to a total of 120 drones intercepted in just 24 hours. This defensive action also led to 12 people being wounded in the capital.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported minor damage at locations where debris from intercepted drones fell. While the Moscow region has faced drone attacks before, the capital itself has been less frequently targeted in comparison. This latest escalation in hostilities comes on the heels of intensified exchanges between Moscow and Kyiv, particularly following a prisoner swap and the end of a three-day truce earlier in the week.
