Rear Admiral S.M. Urooj Athar has officially taken over as the Principal of the Indian Naval Academy (INA) located in Ezhimala. This strategic position places him at the helm of the Indian Navy’s foremost institution dedicated to the training and education of naval officers.
Having been commissioned into the Indian Navy in February 1992, Rear Admiral Athar boasts a distinguished career spanning over three decades. His extensive service record blends operational expertise with a deep commitment to military education and academic leadership, as well as a solid foundation in specialized scientific fields.
Rear Admiral Athar holds an Electronics Engineering degree from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and has specialized in Meteorology, Oceanography, and Satellite Meteorology. His advanced training at institutions like the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune and the Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad has enabled him to significantly bolster the Navy’s operational planning capabilities, particularly in environmental and maritime contexts.
His educational credentials further include alumni status from the College of Defence Management (CDM) in Secunderabad and the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) located in Wellington, where he acquired skills in higher military education and strategic leadership.
Before stepping into his new role at the Indian Naval Academy, he served as the head of the Directorate of Naval Education at Naval Headquarters. In this capacity, he was instrumental in shaping educational policies, curriculum developments, and professional training within the Navy. His prior positions also include serving as Commodore (Naval Education) and Vice Chairperson of the Naval Education Society (NES), where he managed the administration and development of various educational institutions under the Navy’s umbrella.
As Principal of the Indian Naval Academy, Rear Admiral Athar will oversee the comprehensive academic and professional education of officer cadets across different branches of the Navy. Ezhimala Academy is recognized as the premier establishment for training, where it offers military, academic, physical, and leadership development aimed at preparing future officers for the complexities of modern maritime operations.
