Romania Awards Rheinmetall €982 Million Air-Defense Contract

Romania has entered into a landmark agreement with the German defense company Rheinmetall to procure 24 Skyranger 35 air-defense systems and seven Skynex systems, with the contract valued at an impressive 982 million euros, equivalent to approximately $1.12 billion. This acquisition underscores Romania’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities amid evolving security challenges in the region.

The Skyranger 35 is designed specifically to protect maneuvering ground forces from a variety of aerial threats, including droning attacks and conventional airstrikes. Complementing this, the Skynex system offers a modular, ground-based solution focused on safeguarding fixed installations and vital infrastructure.

Furthermore, the contract encompasses two Millennium close-in weapon systems, intended for maritime air-defense applications, reflecting a comprehensive approach to national security.

This procurement forms part of a broader defense investment strategy valued at 5.7 billion euros ($6.6 billion), which also includes acquisitions such as the Lynx KF41 combat vehicle, various munitions, and naval vessels. Notably, the Skyranger systems are set to be integrated onto the Lynx KF41 platform, further enhancing the operational capability of the Romanian armed forces.

Romania’s recent steps to fortify its defense capabilities are particularly pertinent given the geopolitical climate, especially concerning the military posture in the Black Sea region and the growing threat of drone warfare. As articulated by Oliver Dürr, the Head of Rheinmetall’s Air Defence Division, the decision to choose the Skyranger 35 as part of the Lynx platform marks a substantial advancement in European air defense.

Dürr emphasized the significance of this partnership with Romania, highlighting the urgency brought about by recent drone incidents that demonstrate the immediate dangers posed by airborne threats. The Skyranger 35 offers a dynamic and reliable means of safeguarding both military personnel and critical infrastructure against modern threats, characterized by its effectiveness in short-range and very short-range engagements.

The Skyranger 35 system is equipped with advanced features, including a 35mm airburst-capable Oerlikon cannon, radar, and electro-optical sensors, all housed within a protected vehicle. It is engineered to autonomously detect, track, and engage aerial targets while in motion, boasting an effective firing range of up to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). Its airburst munitions have been noted for their efficacy against low-cost loitering munitions, similar to those reportedly used in Ukraine.

In summary, Romania’s strategic investment in advanced air-defense systems signifies a robust enhancement of its military capabilities, addressing both immediate security needs and long-term defense objectives in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
