Shri Satyanarayan Nandlal Nuwal, the Founder and Chairman of Solar Industries India Limited (Solar Group), has been awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, for his significant contributions to the nation’s defence manufacturing and industrial development. The prestigious award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu during a Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Union Government had unveiled the 2026 Padma awards on the eve of Republic Day, with Shri Nuwal being recognized among 113 recipients in the category of Trade and Industry.
A Legacy of Indigenous Defence Innovation
Under Shri Nuwal’s guidance, the Nagpur-based Solar Group has cemented its position as a leading indigenous manufacturer in the defence sector. The company specializes in a variety of advanced technologies, including ammunition, rockets, loitering munitions, anti-drone systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Notably, the Nagastra loitering munition, recognized as India’s first indigenously developed system of its type, has been successfully deployed by the Indian Army during missions such as Operation Sindoor. Advanced versions such as Nagastra-2 and Nagastra-3 are currently under development, alongside other innovative systems like Bhargavastra, a hard-kill anti-drone solution that utilizes micro-missiles.
The Solar Group’s extensive portfolio also includes landmines, warheads, missiles, universal air-bombs, and weaponized drones, contributing significantly to India’s self-reliance in critical defence technologies as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
Personal Journey and Vision
Shri Nuwal’s journey began in a modest village in Rajasthan before moving to Maharashtra, where he built his business from the ground up. He ventured into entrepreneurship at the young age of 18 by establishing an ink manufacturing unit in 1970. In 1995, he founded Solar Industries, originally focusing on industrial explosives before shifting towards high-technology defence manufacturing. Despite facing challenges, including financial difficulties, he transformed the company into a globally recognized enterprise pivotal to India’s defence industrial base.
In addition to his industrial contributions, Shri Nuwal serves as the Chairman of the Shri Ramdeobaba Sarvajanik Samiti, which manages Ramdeobaba University in Nagpur, showcasing his commitment to education and national development alongside industrial growth.
